Pendant lighting adds sparkle to eating areas

- ALYKHAN VELJI

Pendant lighting is most commonly used above a kitchen island. It frees up space to work at a counter, casts great light on what you’re doing and adds a bit of sparkle to the room. Pendants are also being installed everywhere from staircases and bedsides to even above vanities in the bathrooms. They are versatile and work in many different areas of the home and manufacturers are having a lot of fun with their designs.

Pendant lights are really becoming the “it” products in design at the moment. For me, I like the bold statement of grouping pendants en masse above a dining table to create a focal point that is different than a chandelier and more interesting than using pot lights. They’re versatile in size and design.

Here are my top picks for the lighting that will be the exclamation point in your space.

1. Glint Pendant (Crate and Barrel): The teardrop shape and smoked glass give this pendant a rustic vibe. The brass hardware gives it an antique feeling but not so far to take it off trend. Place this above a small table or in a nook, or as a group over an island to add a traditional element.

2. Metal Bell Pendant (Pottery Barn): This gorgeous pendant comes in a variety of colours, but the coral has to be my favourite. A simple shape and not overly dramatic, this would be perfect for an all-white modern kitchen to give it some punch.

3. Wesco Cord Hung Pendant (Barn Light Electric) $99: The price could not be better on this stunning pendant. Clean lines and simple in its form, the yellow highgloss metal finish makes a fabulous statement. This fixture can be customized to have a wire cage on the under side to give it a vintage appeal, making it perfect for a farmhouse style space.

4. Bronze Copper Shade (Tom Dixon): Giving off a ’60s disco/ futuristic vibe, this pendant will cause a stir in any interior. I would love to place a grouping of three above a round table. The reflective surface also makes it perfect for small spaces.

5. Sentry Pendant (Christiaan + Plank): Conceived by Calgary duo the Massie Brothers, this pendant is made of spun aluminum and is available in powder-coated gloss or matte exterior with brushed interior. I love that they can be customized from nine available options for both tops and bottoms. Something unique that would make any space shine.

6. Betina Pendant (Currey & Company): A lot of crystal in a small package, this fixture is classically styled and adds a touch of glamour. The elegant shape would make it fitting for any area where you want a touch of glamour.
