Star Trek: Enterprise Season One (2001-2002) Blu-ray Paramount out of 5

- — Don Healy

Enterprise moves to the front of the line as far as Blu-ray release dates for a Star Trek series. Whereas Star Trek: The Next Generation was remastered from the original camera negatives for release on Blu-ray, all four seasons of Enterprise were filmed in high definition, hence a faster release date.

The series debuted in 2001 and was cancelled in 2005. Enterprise is a prequel, set in the mid-22nd century over 100 years before the Kirk era. The show follows Starfleet Captain Jonathan Archer (Scott Bakula) and the crew of the warp-capable NX-class starship Enterprise as they are just donning their deep space legs.

Vulcan science officer T’Pol (Jolene Blalock) signs on as an observer/political officer for the Vulcan high command and quickly becomes a valued crew member. Other crew members of note include British armoury officer Malcolm Reed (Dominic Keating) and the Denobulan Doctor Phlox (John Billingsley) who uses an osmotic eel to treat ailments.

The first season did have its moments with episodes that stood out from the crowd, such as Dear Doctor and Shuttlepod One, but these highpoints were few and far between. Most of the writing was lacklustre and uninspiring plus the show may have been destined to fail being set before the time of Kirk & Spock and throwing the Trek historical documents out the window.

Bonus features from the DVD release have been ported over to the Blu-ray. Bluray bonus features are too numerous to mention, but the standout is a 90 minute documentary To Boldly Go: Launching Enterprise.
