Balcarres Broncs win QVHL championsh­ip

The Balcarres Broncs are the 2012-13 Qu’Appelle Valley Hockey League champions.

Balcarres defeated the host Balgonie Bisons 4-2 on Wednesday in the fifth and deciding game of the league final.

Balcarres led 2-0 after two periods, courtesy of goals by Jamie Miller and Trevor Focht. Back-to-back goals by Balgonie’s Jason Weitzel tied the game at 2-2 before Miller notched the gamewinner midway through the third period. Bear Trapp added an insurance goal.

■ Kevin Mann had a hat trick to lead the Saskatoon Royals to a 7-4 victory over the visiting Traveland RV Storm in Thursday’s opener of the best-of-seven Prairie Junior Hockey League championsh­ip series.

Game 2 is Sunday at 6 p.m. at the Pilot Butte Recreation Centre.

Austin Severson added one goal and two assists for Saskatoon, which also got goals from Scott Muench, Dustin Wlaz and Brody Jorgenson.

Taylor Ernst, Dylan Herzberg, Justin Nychuk and Sean Delwo replied for the Storm, which got 33 saves from Eric Williams. The Royals’ Jay Hudon stopped 40 shots.

Weyburn’s Graham DeLaet was had a 2-under-par 142 and tie for 38th after Friday’s second round of the PGA’s Shell Houston Open in Humble, Texas.

Steve Wheatcroft led the way at 10 under par after two rounds. The tournament concludes Sunday.

Germany and Afghanista­n played to a 1-1 draw on Thursday in men’s action at the World Class Players Cup soccer tournament, held at the Credit Union Eventplex.

Josip Coric scored for Afghanista­n. Simon Kluge replied for Germany.

In under-16 girls action on Wednesday, Sam Burko scored all three of England’s goals in its 3-2 victory over the United States. Taylor Stadnyk and Madison Gropp scored for the American side.
