Regina Leader-Post

An unrewarding idea

-

I open the Leader-Post every Thursday to read the usual bashing by columnist Greg Fingas of the provincial or federal governments on every issue imaginable.

He rarely disappoints. This past Thursday (June 6) was particularly galling, as the self-proclaimed “progressive” NDP columnist took aim at the easiest of left-wing targets, the evil “rich” — those who have the nerve to be hard-working, entrepreneurial and successful.

The basis of his column is the May 30 Munk debate on the topic “Taxing the rich”. Fingas fails to mention that arguing the “pro” stance was economic genius George Papandreou, president of Socialist International and former prime minister of Greece. We all know how his leadership worked out for Greece.

Fingas also mentions a poll asking Canadians if the rich should be taxed more. Surprise, 88 per cent agree. This poll is disingenuous considering fewer than five per cent of Canadians earn $100,000 a year or more. Compare it to asking 1,000 kindergarteners if candy for breakfast is a good idea. I’ll bet 88 per cent plus agree.

That anyone earning over a $100,000 a year is taxed 40-per-cent plus of their income is outrageous. What incentive remains for hardworking people? Why strive for success to simply turn over such a huge portion of income?

Fingas is pushing for a homogenous society where everyone is the same, earns the same and heck, if you don’t feel like working hard, just relax — the “rich” will tow the line.
