Blue bin plan welcome

-

I know all about the “3Rs”. The first two, “reduce” and “reuse” are the most important. “Recycling” is only the third R for a reason; it is our last resort.

Having that City of Regina blue bin for me means no more hauling paper and cardboard to the mall bin that was, three quarters of the time, jam-packed full, with items piled up outside the bin and blowing all around, necessitating a follow-up trip. I used to sneak my cans, glass and plastic in with the office recycling, so there will no more taking it to work.

Yes, the list of what can go in the blue bin is shorter than what can’t go in it. But not that long ago, nothing was recycled. So, hopefully, in the not too distant future the list of allowable items will grow.

For those people who in the past used a home blue-box service, I assume the new program will be cheaper. And for those who have never recycled before, here is a brand new opportunity.

I think people will be surprised at how much stuff they used to toss that can now go into the recycling box. Please be respectful to those who have to sort the material. Don’t contaminate the load and turn it into something that has to go to the landfill.

I sincerely hope that everyone who can do so takes advantage of this opportunity we have been given. Together, we can make a difference.
