Balgonie’s Wilson was dressed for success

MOOSE JAW — Aurilla Wilson has won 10 medals over the past two Saskatchewan High Schools Athletic Association track and field championships.

Where does she keep them all?

“I have a rod for dresses to hang on,’’ Wilson said Saturday at Gutheridge Field. “I have only one dress on it, so that’s where I hang all my medals.’’

Wilson certainly has the hang of winning medals. A Grade 10 student at Balgonie’s Greenall High School, she received three midget girls gold medals — in the 800-metre, 1,500m and 3,000m races — and was second to Campbell’s Michaela Allen in the 400m during the two-day meet. Wilson also helped the Qu’Appelle Valley district earn a bronze medal in the girls 4x400m relay.

Her victory in the 800m was especially noteworthy. She posted a time of two minutes 18.50 seconds to break the previous meet record of 2:18.87, set in 2006 by Karissa LePage of Riffel.

Wilson was first in the individual midget girls overall rankings. She was a close second last year after winning the 800m and 1,500m, placing second in the 400m and 3,000m, and celebrating another gold in the 4x400m relay.

Three representatives of the Regina High Schools Athletic Association won individual gold medals in the 800m, 1,500m and 3,000m — Alex Eiswerth of Campbell (senior boys), Greg Hetterley of O’Neill (junior boys) and Sarah Slusar of Riffel (junior girls). Eiswerth captured the three senior boys titles for the second successive year.

Regina’s other multiple gold medallists were Paige Jeannot of Campbell (midget girls triple jump and long jump) and Angela Bongomin of Luther (midget girls discus and shot put).

Sophia Zemlak of Regina Christian School (senior girls) and Allen (midget girls) were first in the 400m, second in the 200m and third in the 800m in their respective age divisions.

Jesse Van Eaton of Sheldon-Williams repeated as the provincial senior girls 3,000m champion and added a silver medal in the 1,500m.

Miller’s Nyka Sutter placed first in the senior girls 800m and second in the 400m, despite being a Grade 11 student in a field that included many Grade 12 runners.

“I was expecting real tough competition, which I got,’’ Sutter said.

“I knew most of the people I was racing against. I forgot about the age difference for those two minutes (in the 800m). I just thought, ‘I’m in this to win this.’ ’’

Sutter enjoyed another strong meet after capturing four junior girls medals last year, when she won the 800m, placed second in the 1,500m and 3,000m, and added a bronze medal in the 400m.

Marshall Neuls of O’Neill was Regina’s other gold medallist at this year’s provincial championships. He won the midget boys high jump.

Kristian McCullough of LeBoldus (silver in senior boys 100m and 200m), Shamar Donelson of LeBoldus (silver in junior boys 100m and 200m), Opong Bramble of O’Neill (silver in junior boys 400m, bronze in 200m) and Matt Johnson of LeBoldus (bronze in junior boys 1,500m and 3,000m) won two medals apiece.

Along with Wilson, the overall individual leaders were Tyler Kreklewich of Melville (midget boys), Hannah Josuttes of Paradise Hill (junior girls), Alex Froese of Osler Valley Christian Academy (junior boys), Katelyn Lehner of Prince Albert St. Mary (senior girls) and Kieran Johnston of Saskatoon Evan Hardy (senior boys).

Johnston won the 100m hurdles, 100m, 200m and 400m, becoming the first male runner in meet history to win all four sprints. He also established a personal best in each event.

Kreklewich won the long jump, triple jump and 200m to go with a second-place finish in the 400m.

Emanwil Ginawi of Miller (midget boys), Slusar (junior girls) and Hetterley (junior boys) were second in the individual standings. Hetterley was tied with Adam Paslawski of Saskatoon Holy Cross.

Allen (midget girls), Eiswerth (senior boys) and Lumsden’s Adriana Davis (senior girls) were third overall. Davis was followed by Zemlak and Lumsden’s Renee Lavoy.

Saskatoon won the district title with 1,581.5 points. North Central (1,336.5) and Regina (1,247) were next in line. The Saskatoon team has won all 62 provincial meets it has entered.

The top schools were St. Mary (4A), Lumsden (3A), Outlook (2A) and Lake Lenore (1A).
