Dale Murray Stonechild will stand trial on a second-degree murder charge laid in relation to a homicide that occurred earlier this year.

Stonechild, a 58-year-old man from Balcarres, was present in custody at Regina provincial court this week for his preliminary hearing, held to determine whether the Crown has sufficient evidence to take the matter to trial.

Judge Jeff Kalmakoff listened to approximately 2 1/2 days of evidence before deciding the Crown had presented enough evidence, committing Stonechild to stand trial on the charge. Details of evidence heard can’t be reported because of a court-imposed publication ban.

A date for the trial, to be heard by a Court of Queen’s Bench judge and jury, has not yet been set.

Stonechild is charged in the death of Victor Richard McNab. According to previously released information, the 81-year-old man was found dead on Jan. 9 after police were sent early that morning to the 1400 block of Rae Street. Police have not released any information about the circumstances or cause of McNab’s death.

Man accused of making bomb threat

A 22-year-old Regina man is facing a mischief charge after allegedly making a bomb threat that led to the evacuation of a local business on Tuesday.

According to information from the Regina Police Service, police were sent at about 1:50 p.m. Tuesday to a business in the 1200 block of Pasqua Street North for a report of a bomb threat there.

Employees were evacuated upon police arrival but, after investigating further and speaking to staff, it was determined the threat had been unfounded. It’s alleged the threat came from an acquaintance of one of the staff members who sent the threat as a prank to interrupt business, police said. Once police reached that conclusion, staff members were allowed to return to work and continue with their day.

Police have charged Jonas Daniel Peter with mischief under $5,000. He is slated to make his first court appearance on July 18.

Police are reminding the public that making bomb threats is not a prank and can result in criminal charges.

Prelim date set in assault case

A preliminary hearing date has been set for one of two men who are accused of assaulting and injuring each other earlier this year.

Jamie Miller, 30, is charged with aggravated assault against 35-yearold Dale Lawrence Henderson — who, in turn, is charged with aggravated assault against Miller.

Miller appeared briefly at Regina Provincial Court on Wednesday by closed-circuit television from the Regina jail, at which time a defence lawyer set his charge for a preliminary hearing on Aug. 13. Preliminary hearings are held to determine whether the Crown’s evidence is sufficient to take a charge to trial.

While Henderson was released in May, Miller will remain in custody for the time being. Henderson returns to court in July.

According to information previously released by the Regina Police Service, officers responded at 7:42 p.m. on May 4 to a parking lot at Dewdney Avenue and Elphinstone Street for a report of a possible stabbing.

Once there, police found Henderson lying in the parking lot with multiple injuries, the nature of which hasn’t been disclosed. Shortly after, officers located Miller with injuries that included a badly slashed hand in the 3500 block of Dewdney Avenue. EMS took both men to hospital for treatment.

Police said it’s believed the two men were in a fight and assaulted each other.
