Red Sox rally past Weyburn

The Regina Red Sox rallied from deficits of 5-0 and 8-2 en route to defeating the host Weyburn Beavers 10-8 in Western Major Baseball League action Wednesday at Tom Laing Park.

Regina plated seven runs in the top of the seventh inning to go ahead 9-8. The Red Sox added an insurance run in the top of the ninth.

Austin Drummonds had three hits and drove in two runs for the Red Sox. Chase Benfield and Travis Tessandori had two hits apiece for Regina. Spencer Kidder drove in three runs for Weyburn.

Robert Price earned the pitching decision over Kurtis McCallum. Jacob Leyba got the save.

The Red Sox are to visit Saskatoon and play the Yellow Jackets tonight.

■■■ Three pitchers combined to strike out 20 batters over seven innings as the Regina Buffalos defeated the Moose Jaw Mallards 101 in Baseball Regina bantam AAA play on Tuesday.

Winning pitcher Dryden Kaczmar and relievers Tristan Boire and Cole Chamberlin led the Buffalos.

Randy Orchard hit two doubles for Regina, and Boire chipped in by going 3-for-4 at the plate.

■■■ Seven current and two former members of the University of Regina Cougars track and field team are to compete in the 2013 Canadian championsh­ips, which are slated to run today through Sunday in Moncton, N.B.

On the men’s side, Regina is represente­d by Tait Nystuen (400-metre hurdles), Jeremy Eckert (high jump), Lex Ewen (long jump), Kelly Wiebe (10,000m) and Tevaughn Campbell (100m). On the women’s side, it’s Joy Becker (long jump), Megan Rumpel (heptathlon), Merissa Margetts (100m, 200m) and Amanda Ruller (100m, 200m).
