Need somewhere to put shoes? A nook for books? A place for pictures? With the right tools and materials, you can build it yourself. An organized home is just a few pieces of lumber away.

Never picked up a hammer

Any woman who has a slew of shoes cluttering her closet will want to break out the tools for this high-heel organizer. “All you need is a saw, a hammer and some pieces of moulding,” said Christine Sharry of Home Depot, woodworking expert for the company’s website.

Just paint or stain a piece of crown molding, attach it to the wall studs — or use anchors to attach it to the drywall — using screws, and voila! You’ve freed up some valuable closet-floor real estate.

Can handle a saw

A small rack, perfectly sized for about 12 cookbooks, is made from just four boards — two sides, a back and a shelf. “Use a nice wood, like cherry, which takes stain easily, and you’ll have a beautiful piece for the kitchen,” said Bruce Johnson, a refinishing expert, author and television personality.

Not afraid of basic power tool

Author Ana White’s ‘ten-dollar ledges’ are great for creating a custom gallery wall in your home. Use two 1-by-4-inch boards and one 1-by-2-inch board — all eight-feet long. Add some screws, some wood filler and a few coats of paint and pat yourself on the back. Job done!
