Cougars extend winning streak

The University of Regina Cougars women’s volleyball team is on a roll.

The Cougars won their third straight Canada West match Friday in Saskatoon, downing the Saskatchew­an Huskies 25-15, 18-25, 27-25, 25-17.

Regina improved to 6-9 and pulled to within one game of the Huskies and Alberta Pandas who, at 7-8, are tied for the seventh and final playoff spot.

Desiree Ates had 18 kills and 13 digs for the Cougars, who got 18 kills and four blocks from Michelle Sweeting and 41 assists from Leah Shevkenek. Kayla Tycholiz led the Huskies with 12 kills and seven blocks.

The teams are to meet again today in Saskatoon.

■ ■ ■ The Huskies swept the Cougars 25-18, 25-19, 25-23 in a Canada West men’s volleyball match Friday in Saskatoon.

Andrew Nelson had 10 kills and Caleb Eschbach recorded 32 assists, seven digs and three blocks for the Cougars (0-15).

Bryan Fraser topped the Huskies (6-9) with 10 kills and added eight digs.

Saskatchew­an plays host to a rematch today.

■ ■ ■ Regina’s men’s hockey team dropped its fourth straight Canada West decision Friday, losing 5-4 in overtime to the Mount Royal Cougars at the Co-operators Centre.

Regina (9-10-2) has lost twice in regulation time, once in a shootout and once in overtime during its current skid.

Troy Hunter scored twice for Regina, which got its other goals from Brock Appleyard and Cody Fowlie.

Justin Kirsch’s power-play goal at 4:40 of the first overtime session was the winner for Mount Royal (7-11-1).

Eric Galbraith had a pair of goals for the visiting Cougars, including the tying marker on a power play with 33 seconds left in regulation time. Devin Gannon and Tyler Fiddler also scored for Mount Royal.

Lucas Gore stopped 29 shots for Regina. Dalyn Flette made 21 saves for Mount Royal.

A rematch is set for today, 7 p.m., at the Co-operators Centre.

■ ■ ■ The Cougars lost 3-0 to Mount Royal in Canada West women’s hockey action Friday in Calgary.

Jess Ross made 32 saves for the shutout and Emily Harrison scored twice for Mount Royal (4-14-3). Shyla Stadnicki had the other goal for the host Cougars, who fired 21 shots at Regina netminder Jennifer Schmidt.

The teams are to play again today in Calgary.

■ ■ ■ The Cougars men’s wrestling team lost 40-12 to Dickinson State in a dual meet Friday in Dickinson, N.D.

Evan Lemieux ( 141 pounds) and Matt Fedler (165) had the only wins for Regina, which is to compete in a tournament in Dickinson today.
