Cougars able to handle the Heat in Kelowna

The University of Regina Cougars women’s volleyball team continued its torrid play Friday, this time against the UBC Okanagan Heat.

The Cougars improved to 8-1 since the Christmas break with a 27-25, 21-25, 2521, 25-23 Canada West victory over the Heat in Kelowna.

The hot streak has helped the Cougars improve to 11-10 — the first time this season they have been above .500. Regina started the regular season with four straight losses and was 3-9 after the first half of the season.

Desiree Ates had 21 kills and 16 digs for the Cougars in Friday’s victory. Michelle Sweeting added 18 kills and eight blocks and Leah Shevkenek recorded 49 assists.

Megan Festival posted 20 kills and 10 digs for the No. 6-ranked Heat, which fell to 12-9.

The teams are to play again today in Kelowna.

The result of Friday’s Canada West men’s volleyball contest between the Cougars and host Heat wasn’t available at press time.

The Cougars fell 77-66 to the Calgary Dinos in a Canada West men’s basketball game Friday at the Centre for Kinesiolog­y, Health and Sport.

Darius Mole hit three three-pointers and had 12 points for the Cougars (316), who got nine points and seven rebounds from Travis Sylvestre. Jarred Ogungbemi-Jackson had 21 points for the Dinos (6-13).

Regina will look to snap its seven-game losing streak tonight, 7 o’clock, when it faces the Dinos again at the CKHS.

The Cougars men’s hockey team was blanked 5-0 by the Alberta Golden Bears in Canada West action Friday at the Co-operators Centre.

Kurtis Mucha made 23 saves for the shutout for the Golden Bears, the No. 1-ranked team in the CIS.

Drew Nichol, Johnny Lazo, Ian Barteaux, Torrie Dyck and Jordan Hickmott scored for Alberta, which improved its first-place record to 22-2-1.

Andrew Hayes stopped 32 shots for the Cougars (11-122).

Regina is to play host to a rematch today, 7 p.m., at the Co-operators Centre.

Regina’s women’s hockey team fell to 1-6-2 in its past nine Canada West games with a 2-1 loss Friday to the Alberta Pandas in Edmonton.

Kelly Regnier had the lone goal for the Cougars (11-124), who got 28 saves from Jennifer Schmidt.

Kirsten Toth and Jayden Skoye scored for Alberta (19-5-3) and Michala Jeffries stopped 17 shots.

The teams are to play again today in Edmonton.
