Hebert enjoys record-setting night

Brendan Hebert set a record in passing Saturday.

The University of Regina Cougars’ fourth-year guard broke the school record for career assists during a 92-81 Canada West men’s basketball victory over the University of Calgary Dinos at the Centre for Kinesiolog­y, Health and Sport.

Hebert recorded his 348th assist late in the first quarter when he set up Kade Marra’s three-pointer. That surpassed the 347 assists Zach Michell had during his Cougars career (2001-06).

Hebert finished the night with 11 assists and added 16 points for Regina (4-16), which snapped a seven-game losing streak. Travis Sylvestre added a career-high 24 points and Marra chipped in with a career-best 14 for the Cougars.

Jarred Ogungbemi-Jackson had 27 points for Calgary (6-14).

The Cougars are to close out their regular season next weekend against the visiting Brandon Bobcats.

The Cougars women’s basketball team won its 14th straight Canada West game Saturday, downing the Dinos 76-43 at the CKHS.

Nicole Clarke had 18 points and nine rebounds for the Cougars (18-2), who got 16 points from Alyssia Kajati and 10 from Megan Chamberlin. Tamara Jarrett and Aimee Wilson each scored 10 points for Calgary (11-9).

Regina is to play host to Brandon next weekend.

The Cougars women’s volleyball team improved to 9-1 in its last 10 matches of the Canada West regular season, beating the UBC Okanagan Heat 25-16, 23-25, 25-23, 25-27, 15-9 Saturday in Kelowna.

Regina (12-10) finished the regular season in sixth place and will play the third-place Trinity Western Spartans in a best-of-three quarterfin­al. The series is to start Thursday in Langley, B.C.

On Saturday, Regina’s Desiree Ates had 26 kills and 18 digs. Ates finished the campaign with 347 kills, breaking the Canada West singleseas­on mark of 344 set by Nicola Dirks of the Winnipeg Wesmen in 2006-07.

Leah Shevkenek added 45 assists and 10 digs for the Cougars. The rookie setter finished the season with 860 assists, breaking the conference’s single-season record of 842, set by Calgary’s Natalie Schwartz in 2004-05.

Megan Festival had 14 kills and 20 digs for the Heat (12-10).

Regina’s men’s volleyball squad swept the Heat in Kelowna on the weekend, giving the Cougars four wins in their final six regular-season matches.

After winning 16-25, 27-29, 25-20, 25-15, 15-10 on Friday, the Cougars posted a 25-16, 28-26, 20-25, 25-21 victory on Saturday to finish the Canada West season at 4-18.

In Friday’s match, Andrew Nelson recorded 18 kills and 11 digs for Regina, which got 11 kills and 15 digs from Matt Lueck and 36 assists, 11 digs and five aces from Caleb Eschbach. Alex Swiatlowsk­i led the Heat with 16 kills.

In the rematch, Nelson and Lueck each had 13 kills and Rhodri Simmonds added nine blocks. Nate Speijer had 18 kills for UBCO (4-18).

Neither club made the playoffs.
