Kajati’s double-double propels Cougars to victory

Led by 23 points and 15 rebounds from Alyssia Kajati, the University of Regina Cougars women’s basketball team defeated the Toronto Varsity Blues 67-62 Friday at the Redbird Classic tournament in Montreal.

Jennilea Coppola added 12 points, 11 rebounds and five assists for the Cougars, who got 10 points from Katie Polischuk and five assists from Kehlsie Crone.

The Cougars play McGill Saturday and Lakehead Sunday. In non-conference men’s basketball action, the Cougars beat Dickinson State 69-63 in Dickinson, N.D. Brandon Tull led Regina with 15 points.

The Cougars women’s volleyball team opened its Canada West regular season with a 25-19, 25-22, 25-17 loss to the Manitoba Bisons Friday in Winnipeg.

Michelle Sweeting had a team-high 12 kills for the Cougars. Leah Shevkenek had 27 assists for the Cougars. The teams meet again Saturday in Winnipeg.

In Canada West men’s volleyball action Friday in Winnipeg, Manitoba swept the Cougars 26-24, 25-20, 25-22.

Michael Corrigan had 17 aces for the Cougars and Dalton Wolfe added 11. Jacques Bourgeaud had a team-high 10 digs for the Cougars, who meet Manitoba again Saturday in Winnipeg.

The host Calgary Dinos shut out the Cougars 5-0 Friday. Elgin Pearce had one goal and two assists for the Dinos, who got 22 saves from Kris Lazaruk. The Cougars

and Dinos play again Saturday in Calgary.

In Canada West women’s hockey, Calgary defeated the Cougars 5-3 at the Co-operators Centre Friday.

Erika Mitschke led the Dinos with two goals. Carleen Meszaros and Emma Waldenberg­er replied for the Cougars. The teams meet again Saturday, 3 p.m., at the Co-operators Centre.
