Cougars’ Campbell claims CIS silver

Tevaughn Campbell of the University of Regina Cougars won a silver medal Thursday at the CIS track and field championsh­ips in Windsor, Ont.

Campbell finished second in the men’s 60 metres with a time of 6.80 seconds, just .04 seconds behind Bismark Boateng of the York Lions.

Campbell entered the meet ranked first in the event having posted a time of 6.78 seconds earlier in the season. Boateng was second at 6.79.

Boateng had the fastest time in Thursday’s preliminar­y round at 6.78, with Campbell second at 6.80. Regina’s Kahlen Branning was 14th at 7.08 seconds and didn’t advance to the finals.

Campbell and Branning were part of the Cougars team that advanced to Saturday’s final in the men’s 4x200m relay.

Campbell, Branning, Ian McLellan and Connor Bloom posted a time of one minute 29.09 seconds in Thursday’s prelims to finish third in qualifying.

On the women’s side, Merissa Margetts of the Cougars was the sixth-fastest qualifier in the women’s 60m. She retained that placing in the final, running a 7.61.

York’s Khamica Bingham won the gold in 7.19 seconds, breaking the CIS record of 7.26 that she had set one hour earlier in the prelims.

In the women’s 600m, Regina’s Adrea Propp finished fourth in the preliminar­y round with a time of 1:32.92 to advance to Saturday’s final.

Propp also helped the Cougars qualify for Saturday’s final in the women’s 4x200m relay.

The team of Margetts, Propp, Renee Lavoy and Joy Becker finished fifth in the prelims with a time of 1:41.86.

In Regina’s only appearance in a field event Thursday, Elisabeth Fortier finished eighth in the women’s weight throw with a toss of 15.97 metres.

The meet runs through Saturday.

Goaltender Lucas Gore has left the Cougars men’s hockey team to join the ECHL’s Stockton Thunder, a minor-league affiliate of the NHL’s New York Islanders.

Gore, who had one season of CIS eligibilit­y remaining, made his debut with the Thunder on Saturday. He made 33 saves in a 6-2 loss to the Idaho Steelheads.

During his four seasons with the Cougars, Gore posted a 22-46-1 record with a 3.23 goals-against average, a .904 save percentage and two shutouts.
