Bail hearing adjourned for accused
A crowded Regina courtroom heard three hours of evidence and submissions Thursday at a bail hearing for one of two Regina teenage boys accused of killing 16-year-old Hannah Leflar.
But Judge Leslie Halliday did not deliver a decision in Regina Youth Court on whether the boy will remain in custody while his firstdegree murder charge is before the courts. Instead, Halliday adjourned the matter to Tuesday afternoon for further discussions with Crown prosecutor Chris White and defence lawyer Greg Wilson.
Details of the evidence and submissions at the bail hearing cannot be revealed due to a publication ban.
According to information previously released by the Regina Police Service, on Jan. 12, officers attended a home on the 400 block of Garnet Street North and discovered Leflar’s deceased body inside. Two days later, the boys, both 16 years old at the time, were arrested and charged with first-degree murder in Leflar’s death.
The accused cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
Preliminary hearing dates for the other youth have been set for Nov. 16 to Dec. 4. If the matter proceeds, that accused has elected a Regina Court of Queen’s Bench judge and jury trial.
The Crown previously announced it intends to seek adult sentences for both boys if they are convicted.
Earlier this month, the victim’s family launched a petition against the accused’s right to seek release from custody while the charge is before the courts.
Several people in the courtroom on Thursday wore purple clothing or purple ribbons in memory of Leflar.
