Barnstormi­ng tours being celebrated

Phil S. Dixon, a historian, author and founding member of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City, is to conduct a presentati­on June 18 in Regina.

The session — presented by the Saskatchew­an Baseball Hall of Fame and Saskatchew­an Sports Hall of Fame — will begin at 3 p.m., in the Regina Public Library’s Central Branch theatre.

Dixon will discuss the barnstormi­ng tours of the Negro Baseball League in Western Canada in the 1930s and 1940s.

He is touring 90 cities in which the Kansas City Monarchs played games to honour the 90th anniversar­y of the team’s first championsh­ip.

Dixon will also appear June 17, 3 p.m., at the Saskatoon Public Library (Cliff Wright Branch auditorium).

Admission is free, but donations to the halls of fame are encouraged.

■ Aimee Unchulenko was the winning pitcher in both ends of a doublehead­er in Regina Ladies Softball Associatio­n action Wednesday.

Unchulenko helped Remco blank the Extreme 7-0 before earning another win in a 9-4 victory over the Lumsden Cubs A.

Also on Wednesday at Douglas Park, Chelsea Poitras had a home run to help the Edge post a 9-1 victory over the Riot.

■ Vance Thompson pitched a complete-game shutout, striking out 13 over six innings, as the Piapot Wolfpack defeated the Muskowekwa­n Pride 10-0 in Western Cycle Rambler Park Fastball League action Wednesday.

Also on Wednesday at Rambler Park, the Bulyea Rustlers defeated the Muscowpetu­ng Rez 21-4.

■ Three speedskati­ng clubs in Saskatchew­an were among 42 clubs across the country that each received a $1,000 bursary through Intact Insurance Company’s Podium Tracker program.

The five-year-old program donates $1,000 for each individual medal won by Canadian short- and long-track skaters in World Cup and world championsh­ip competitio­ns. During the 2014-15 campaign, Canadians won 42 medals.

The beneficiar­ies in Saskatchew­an were the Moose Jaw Kiwanis Speed Skating Club, the Melville Speed Skating Club and the Prince Albert Speed Skating Club.

■ Kyle Lakness recorded a hole-in-one on Wednesday at Deer Valley Golf and Estates.

Lakness aced the par-3, 110-yard fourth hole with a pitching wedge.
