Stein in line for qualification for Parapan Am Games
Janz Stein of Regina’s Excel Athletika track club is on the verge of formally qualifying for the Parapan Am Games, to be held Aug. 7-15 in Toronto.
Competing in Phoenix last weekend at the Desert Challenge Games — his first outdoor and international competition — in the T44 category for below-knee amputees, Stein met the Games qualifying standard in both the men’s long jump and 100 metres.
The 33-year-old Stein won the long jump with a distance of 5.51 m and was seventh in the 100-m dash (12.41 seconds).
Both finishes were personal bests for Stein.
Next up for Stein is the Canadian track and field championships, which are set for July 2-5 in Edmonton. The Canadian Pan Am Games and Parapan Am Games track and field teams are to be selected at nationals. At that event, Stein will need to compete and prove his fitness before the formal selection is made.
Regina’s Carla Nicholls is the head coach of Canada’s Parapan Am Games track and field team.
The Re gina men’s amateur golf championship is to be held today and Sunday.
Today’s tee times range from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Royal Regina Golf Club. Tee times for the final round, to be held Sunday at the Murray Golf Course, are from 10 a.m. to noon.
The tournament will include 48 golfers from throughout Saskatchewan.
Dean Holoien had two home runs for the Moose Jaw Canadians in their 8-8 tie with Silver Screen Sportswear on Thursday in Western Cycle Rambler Park Fastball League action.
Chris Burns homered for Silver Screen, which scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to create the 8-8 draw.
Also on Thursday, the Rampage defeated the Pasqua A’s 6-5, with Les George earning the pitching decision over Wacey Strongeagle.
The Cyclones won a pair of games Thursday in the Regina Ladies Softball Association.
During their doubleheader at Douglas Park, the Cyclones posted victories over Standing Buffalo (14-3) and the Canucks (18-2).

The Michelle Moore International swim meet is being held this weekend at the Lawson Aquatic Centre.
he event has attracted more than 300 swimmers from Saskatchewan, Quebec and Algeria. Competition begins today and Sunday at 9 a.m.
International finals are to begin both days at 5 p.m. Invitational and developmental finals are scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
Three water polo players from southern Saskatchewan have been named to the women’s team that will represent Canada at the 2015 Summer Universiade, July 3-14 in Gwangju, South Korea.
The Weyburn duo of Taylor Molde and Kelsey Jensen made the team, as did Auriel Bill of Estevan. Molde also played for Canada in the 2013 Universiade.
