Cougars softball team off to strong start

Haley Gibson helped to lead the University of Regina Cougars women’s softball team to three wins and a tie in its Western Collegiate Softball Associatio­n conference games on the weekend in Regina.

Gibson led the Cougars with a home run and a double in a 3-1 victory over the University of Saskatchew­an Huskies on Saturday.

Regina also defeated SAIT 11-3 on Saturday.

Lindsey McNab led the Cougars to a 7-5 win over the University of Calgary, Sunday. She had two hits, including a two-run home run.

The Cougars later tied the Huskies 7-7 on Sunday, giving Regina a 3-0-1 record in conference play.

In non-conference action, the Cougars lost 6-3 to Dawson College from Glendive, Mont., on Saturday, but defeated the same team 7-1 on Sunday — with Gibson homering in the latter game.

The Regina Pat Canadians defeated the visiting Yorkton RawTech Maulers 6-2 on Sunday in Saskatchew­an Midget AAA Hockey League exhibition play.

Bryce Platt scored two goals for Regina while Mark Edmands, Tanner McKechnie, Ben Solomon and Turner Ripplinger added singles.

Morgan Bodgan stopped seven of eight shots and Dean McNabb stopped 11 of 12 shots in net for the Pat Canadians.

Brett Femp and Keenan Taphorn scored for Yorkton.

Alex Geddes stopped 14 of 19 shots in goal for Yorkton while Talen King stopped 17 of 18 shots for the Maulers.

The Pat Canadians’ next pre-season game is slated for Wednesday, 7:30 p.m., against the Notre Dame Hounds at the Co-operators Centre.

Humboldt’s Brianne Theisen-Eaton is the Sask Sport Inc. athlete of the month for August.

Theisen-Eaton won the silver medal in heptathlon at the 2015 Internatio­nal Associatio­n of Athletics Federation­s world championsh­ips in Beijing, China from Aug. 22-30.

Four Regina athletes were also nominated for the award: Jessica Frotten (wheelchair athletics), Brian Palaschuk (swimming), Lexy Vincent (canoe/kayak) and Kendell Massier (rowing).

Skip Max Kirkpatric­k and his Swift Current team had a 3-1 record and were tied with Germany and Norway for first place in Group B after Monday’s draws at the 2015 world mixed curling championsh­ip in Bern, Switzerlan­d.

Canada lost 6-5 to Spain and beat Latvia 7-4 on Monday. Kirkpatric­k’s rink is set to play Australia today.
