Cougars play Pronghorns to a draw

The University of Regina Cougars earned their first point of the Canada West women’s soccer season Sunday thanks to a 0-0 tie with the host University of Lethbridge Pronghorns.

Regina, which lost 3-0 to the hometown Calgary Dinos on Saturday, are 0-3-1 through two weekends of the regular season.

In Sunday’s contest, freshman Savannah Williams made three saves for the Cougars. Regina had nine shots on goal but couldn’t beat Micaela Stone in the Lethbridge net.

On Saturday, Dinos keeper Samantha Chang-Foidl stopped two shots for the shutout.

Dominica Wronski (45th minute), Mollee Ramsay (61st) and Maddison Fritze (80th) scored for Calgary.

The Cougars are at home next weekend for games against the Grant MacEwan Griffins (Saturday at noon) and Mount Royal Cougars (Sunday at noon).

Regina’s women’s hockey team took a pair of preseason games from Mount Royal on the weekend in Weyburn.

In Sunday’s contest, Kylie Gavelin scored three goals and Jaycee Magwood added one as Regina won 4-1.

On Saturday, Regina won 3-2 in overtime. Gavelin, Bailey Braden and Emma Waldenberg­er scored for the Cougars.

The Cougars men’s hockey team won two of its three exhibition games on the weekend.

Regina beat the Briercrest Clippers 8-2 on Sunday at the Co-operators Centre.

Austin Bourhis, J.J. Coleshaw, Stephen Langford, Dylen McKinlay, Brock Appleyard, Miguel Pereira, Stefan Virtanen and Cody Fowlie scored for Regina.

On Saturday, the Cougars lost 3-0 to the Saskatchew­an Huskies at the Co-operators Centre.

On Friday, Dillan McCombie scored twice in Regina’s 4-0 victory over the Manitoba Bisons on the Ochapowace First Nation.

Fowlie and Pereira also scored for the Cougars, while Dawson MacAuley posted the shutout.
