International Day of Peace

On Sept. 21, 1981, the United Nations declared the first International Day of Peace. The theme for this year’s celebration is: Partnerships for Peace -- Dignity for All. The Capricorn moon of power and authority suggests a reluctant ceasefire and a skeptical laying down of arms. Any progress counts as positive in a matter this important!

ARIES (March 21-April 19). Those who spend a great deal of time on social media will find it difficult to refrain from the dangers of comparison. Just remember: No one else is you, so what is there to compare?

TAURUS (April 20-May 20). Happiness is a small number of reasonable aims. Once you’ve whittled down the list, you’ll achieve your goals. Then all you have to do is choose how you’ll celebrate!

GEMINI (May 21-June 21). You’re not an easy audience. Right now people have to be either mighty charismatic or completely in line with your current interests in order to get your attention.

CANCER (June 22-July 22). You didn’t get this far by being lackadaisical about your own success. However, this is one of those times when pushing ahead won’t help. It will serve you better to sit back and take stock of where you are.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). You’ll take a carefully chosen approach to business that begins in your mind and your closet. You may make an investment that helps your image match your message.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). Upon meeting an admired someone, your thoughts will quickly knit together a plan for embodying the desirable qualities this person possesses. It is in you to be who you wish to be.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). When life heads you in directions you don’t want to go, your attitude will control the pleasantness of the journey. Accept what is. Mentally adjust to make yourself more comfortable.

SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). You and your friend or partner have grown in distinctly different ways. When you reconnect in the near future, you will have much to teach each other.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). Your methods are different from those of your teachers. You’ve taken all you’ve learned and turned it into a new way. Just be sure to give credit where it’s due.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). Contentment is nothing to take lightly. How often in life can we really say there is nothing we need or want that we don’t have already? Tomorrow brings ambition anew, so enjoy the present peaceful state.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). The people who irritate us teach us something about ourselves. They offer shortcuts to spiritual evolution. What do you have inside you that matches their undesirable qualities? Identify and rid yourself of it.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). You usually do your own bidding, but today you can trust another person to do it for you while you tend to a different matter. This new matter will not end peaceably without your involvement.

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY (Sept. 21). Nobel Prize-winner Andre Gide said, “Man cannot discover new oceans unless he has the courage to lose sight of the shore.” This year’s journey starts with your bold decision to trade a familiar view for an adventure. You’ll be paid handsomely by year’s end. You’ll earn a new license or degree in 2016. Pisces and Sagittarius people adore you. Your lucky numbers are: 6, 13, 33, 49 and 15.

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEACE POEM:

In honor of this International Day of Peace, I would like to share part of a poem I wrote for my daughter. The following is an excerpt from “People Are Different”:

...and this is the reason they eat different foods, and talk different talks and feel different moods, and walk different walks and dance different dances, and play different games, and have different romances and talents and limits and wishes and dreams...

But wait! Am I missing what this really means?

Each person there is only wants to be free, to find some kind of home and live in harmony in a place that feels safe, like it’s where they belong and can do their own thing, and can sing their own song.

Well, it’s something to think of the next time you do find that you’re next to someone who isn’t like you:

People are different, as different can be except for the sameness we share underneath.

--From “People Are Different” by Pearl and Lovey (our pen names for children’s projects)

CELEBRITY PROFILES: Faith Hill was raised in a small town in Mississippi called “Star,” and this country girl was destined to be just that. Hill went from performing for the 4-H club to traveling the world and selling more than 40 million records worldwide. Virgo is an excellent sign for country music, as it lends an earthy sensibility and a focus on down-home values. Her natal Venus in show-stopping Leo doesn’t hurt, either!
