Dolphins’ Palaschuk adds to his record total

-

Brian Palaschuk of the Regina Dolphins Swim Club set two provincial records in the male 1517 age group on the weekend at the Prairie Winter Invitational in Winnipeg.

Palaschuk finished first in the 200-metre freestyle with a time of one minute 50.99 seconds to break the previous short-course record of 1:51.38 set in 1991 by Rob McFarlane.

The 17-year-old Palaschuk also set a record in the 100m individual medley with a time of 58.12 seconds. The previous mark of 59.56 seconds was established in 2013 by Noah Choboter.

Palaschuk now holds six provincial age-group records, all of which he set in 2015.

The University of Regina Rams announced Monday the additions of five local recruits for the 2016 season.

Adair Borys of Weyburn Comprehensive, Colton Friesen of Winston Knoll Collegiate, Scott Jones from Weyburn Comprehensive, Blake Scherle of Balgonie Greenall High School and Brayden Wagg of Campbell Collegiate have signed letters of intent.

Borys played cornerback and slotback for the Eagles, but he’ll play on defence with the Rams. He tied for the Moose Jaw High School Football League lead with four interceptions in six regular-season games in 2015.

Friesen was named a Regina Intercollegiate Football League Schwann Conference all-star at receiver last season after recording 23 catches for 330 yards and one touchdown.

Jones, the younger brother of former Rams star Brett Jones, played offensive line, linebacker and long-snapper for the Eagles. The Rams recruited him as a fullback.

Scherle was the Stewart Conference’s all-star quarterback last season after throwing a league-leading 10 touchdown passes.

Wagg was a Schwann Conference all-star at quarterback last season after leading the league in all major passing categories. He’s expected to move to running back with the Rams.

Regina’s Erin Epema has committed to the University of Windsor Lancers women’s volleyball team for the 2016-17 season.

The 5-foot-9 outside hitter, who recently was named the Saskatchewan Volleyball Association’s female U17 player of the year, is a product of the Regina Cougars volleyball club. Epema also played for the Saskatchewan provincial team this summer.
