It’s finally summer and Canadians’ travel thoughts are clearly turning to home.

A study by the folks at Choice Hotels Canada (choicehotels.ca/) says that 89 per cent of Canadians plan to travel within the country in the next two years, which is welcome news to folks in the restaurant, hotel and attractions business. The study also found a full 92 per cent of Canadians with kids plan a Canada trip in the next little while.

Family holidays to big cities such as Montreal or Vancouver and to natural spots such as Ontario’s lakes or the Rocky Mountains have long been a treasured part of the Canadian experience.

The study shows 87 per cent of us like to travel with family and friends and that 84 per cent of us feel family trips bring us closer together.

“In this busy age of online distractions and separate schedules, vacations are a time for families to connect, share memories and spend quality time together,” said Julie Chan-McConnell, director of marketing and loyalty at Choice Hotels Canada.

Taking the family pet along in the back seat was listed as important to 22 per cent of Canadians (26 per cent of those with kids).

The study found that, while we all talk about finding new places to go every year (74 per cent of respondents said they look for novel places to visit when they travel), close to 50 per cent of us fall back on the same tried-and-true spots each year.

Not only do we like taking our kids with us on holidays, a full 88 per cent of us say their children help determine where their families go on a vacation.
