U of Regina women take on challenge
The University of Regina Cougars women’s hockey team won all three of its games at the Mandi Schwartz Challenge on the weekend at the Co-operators Centre.
Regina posted victories over Team Saskatchewan (2-0 on Friday), the Saskatchewan Huskies (4-3 on Saturday) and the Lethbridge Pronghorns (3-2 on Sunday).
The tournament was a joint effort between the Saskatchewan Hockey Association and the Cougars women’s hockey team.
The Cougars women’s soccer team
lost a pair of 1-0 games on the weekend.
Regina played the Mount Royal Cougars on Saturday in Calgary and the Grant MacEwan Griffins on Sunday in Edmonton. Sarah Morely (Saturday) and Sueklana Choucair (Sunday) were the goal scorers.
Regina has a 1-3-2 record in Canada West play.
The Cougars women’s basketball team
registered a 97-47 exhibition victory over Lakeland College, from Lloydminster, at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health and Sport on Friday.
Katie Polischuk led the Cougars with 22 points on the strength of 5-for-8 shooting from three-point range. Charlotte Kot (with 18 points), Michaela Kleisinger (11) and Kyanna Giles (10) also scored in double figures for the Cougars, who got 10 rebounds from Christina McCusker.
The Cougars men’s hockey team
lost a pair of pre-season games to the Manitoba Bisons, falling 7-2 on Friday and 3-0 on Saturday in Winnipeg. Dillan McCombie and Trent Lofthouse scored for Regina on Friday. The U of R played
host to the Cougar Invitational women’s volleyball tournament on the weekend.
The host team defeated Manitoba 20-25, 25-23, 1625, 25-23, 15-10 on Friday, lost 25-20, 25-14, 25-16 to the Alberta Pandas on Saturday, and lost 25-12, 2624, 25-11 to the Brandon Bobcats on Sunday at the CKHS.
Alberta (3-0) won the tournament. Regina, Manitoba and Brandon all finished at 1-2.
Ray-Lyn Schmidt of Moose Jaw
Central won the Saskatchewan High Schools Athletic Association female golf championship Saturday in Madge Lake.
Schmidt posted a tworound score of 169. Hannah MacNeil of Shaunavon was next in line at 178. Miller’s Alexandra Schmidt (191) placed seventh.
Connor Tate of Kindersley won the SHSAA male title, shooting a 149. Tayden Wallin of Humboldt (151) and Jayden Dubas of Estevan (154) were second and third, respectively.
The Miller Marauders won a
37-34 shootout against the Sheldon-Williams Spartans in Regina Intercollegiate Football League action Friday night at Leibel Field.
Miller improved its record to 3-0. Sheldon-Williams is 2-1. In Friday’s other Stewart Conference game, the Luther Lions blanked the Balfour Bears 11-0. Luther and Balfour are 1-2.
