Kenyan duo finish atop Boston Marathon

Kenya’s Geoffrey Kirui won the 121st Boston Marathon on Monday, pulling away from American Galen Rupp late in the race to win in an unofficial time of two hours nine minutes 37 seconds. Rupp, a three-time Olympian making his Boston debut, was 21 seconds behind. Kenyan policewoma­n Edna Kiplagat won the women’s race in 2:21:52. She pulled ahead of Rose Chelimo of Bahrain in the Newton Hills part of the course to win by 59 seconds. Calgary’s Jakob Puzey was the top Canadian, 41st overall at 2:26:52. Toronto’s Rachel Hannah finished 23rd among women at 2:41:22.

Celtics’ Thomas will play Game 2: coach

Boston Celtics head coach Brad Stevens says Isaiah Thomas plans to play in Game 2 Tuesday night against the Chicago Bulls, then head to Washington state to be with his family and help complete funeral arrangemen­ts for his sister. Thomas attended the team’s film session and short walk-through Monday, but did not speak with the media. Stevens says that after services for Thomas’s sister, the star guard intends to rejoin the team Friday for Game 3 in Chicago. The coach adds that all plans are subject to change depending on how Thomas feels. Chyna Thomas died early Saturday in a one-car crash outside Tacoma, Wash. No funeral date is set and Stevens says the Celtics organizati­on hopes to attend. Boston lost the opener of the seven-game series 106-102 on Monday.

Jackets’ Werenski out for rest of post-season

Columbus Blue Jackets defenceman Zach Werenski will miss the rest of the post-season because of a broken cheekbone. The Blue Jackets’ 19-year-old rookie took a puck to the face on a shot by Pittsburgh Penguins forward Phil Kessel that opened a gash on his right cheek. He played a couple shifts in the third period with a full face mask, but his eye swelled shut and he left the game. He tweeted a photo of his face after the game that showed his eye nearly swollen shut. Pittsburgh won 5-4 in overtime for a 3-0 lead in their first-round series.

No timetable for QB Luck’s return

Andrew Luck isn’t sure when he’ll start throwing again and won’t set a timetable for his return from shoulder surgery. The Indianapol­is Colts’ starting quarterbac­k isn’t expected to do much — if any work — during the team’s off-season workouts. Players and coaches held their first official team activities Monday at the team complex, and for the first time Luck acknowledg­ed his injury problems began during a Week 3 contest at Tennessee in 2015. He missed nine games that season with an assortment of injuries, including a lacerated kidney. After the season, Luck said he opted for rehab rather than surgery. But after aggravatin­g the injury several times last season, he decided to have surgery.

bosox lefty Rodriguez off on paternity leave

Red Sox left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez will miss his scheduled start Tuesday against Toronto after Boston placed him on paternity leave. Rodriguez’s wife Catherine gave birth to a boy on Sunday. Manager John Farrell said left-hander Brian Johnson is likely to start in place of Rodriguez. Johnson has no decisions in two starts at triple-A Pawtucket, where he has a 1.69 ERA and 15 strikeouts in 10 2-3 innings. Rodriguez is 0-1 in two starts with a 5.23 ERA. The club recalled right-hander Ben Taylor from Pawtucket before Monday’s game against Tampa Bay.

Terry’s Chelsea career is coming to an end

Captain John Terry will leave Chelsea at the end of the season after spending his entire career with the London club. The 36-year-old defender has not played since February after losing his place in the team. He has made 713 appearance­s since making his debut in 1998. “I will decide on my future in due course,” Terry said, “but for now I am committed to helping the team achieve success this season.” Chelsea leads the Premier League by four points.
