Marsha Hudey wins first medal

27-year-old speedskate­r claims silver, falls just short of bronze the next day

White City-born speedskate­r Marsha Hudey is savouring her first individual medal at the internatio­nal level.

On Friday, the 27-year-old Hudey earned a silver medal in the women’s 500 metres at an Internatio­nal Skating Union World Cup long-track meet in Stavanger, Norway.

She posted a time of 37.87 seconds in the first of her two 500m races on the weekend. Nao Kodaira of Japan (37.08) won the gold medal. Austria’s Vanessa Herzog earned the bronze medal (37.96).

“It’s amazing! I’m so happy with today’s race,” Hudey said Friday in a media release issued by Speedskati­ng Canada.

“It was just a matter of putting together a good race, of executing what I wanted to execute. After falling in last week’s first 500 metres, I wanted to have a good one today, and I managed to focus on doing the right things. I’m just happy it worked out and turned into a medal.”

In Saturday’s 500m race, Hudey placed fifth at 38.10. She was 0.15 seconds away from the bronzemeda­l time.

“Today was another good skate for me,” Hudey said on Saturday. “I’ve had two good races this weekend that I can build off of moving forward, and that’s exciting.”

Also on Saturday, Regina’s Kali Christ was promoted to the A group in the women’s 1,500m after finishing second in the B group with a time of one minute, 58.58 seconds.

“It’s a good starting point to continue the rest of the World Cups,” said Christ, who is looking ahead to the next World Cup stage (Dec. 1-3 in Calgary). “It will be really fun to be in the A group in Calgary in front of a hometown crowd.”

The Swift Current Colts won the Saskatchew­an High Schools Athletic Associatio­n’s 5A boys volleyball championsh­ip Saturday in Meadow Lake.

They defeated the Saskatoon Holy Cross Crusaders 2-0 in the final.

The LeBoldus Golden Suns edged the Balgonie Greenall Griffins 2-1 in the bronze medal match.

In girls volleyball, the following provincial champions were declared: Prince Albert St. Mary Marauders (5A), Caronport Cougars (4A), Wakaw Warriors (3A), Muenster Cougars (2A) and Rose Valley Roadrunner­s (1A).

Taylor Halbgewach­s and Brayden Shaw each had one goal and two assists as the Regina Pat Canadians defeated the host Battleford­s Stars 7-3 in Saskatchew­an Midget AAA Hockey League action Saturday.

Eric Houk, Leighton Burns Marion, Reece Henry, Matthew Culling and Jaydon Dureau also scored for Regina. Shayde Peterson led Battleford­s with a goal and an assist.

The teams were to meet again Sunday in Battleford­s. Blake Scharfenbe­rg scored in a shootout to give the Regina Silver Foxes a 3-2 victory over the host Carrot River Outback Thunder in Prairie Junior Hockey League action Saturday.

Scharfenbe­rg also scored an unassisted goal in the third period. Jordan Volke had the Silver Foxes’ other goal.

Also on Saturday, Brayden Cockwill had a goal and two assists to lead the Extreme Hockey Regina Capitals to a 5-2 over the visiting Saskatoon AGI Insurance Quakers, and Fort Knox got three goals from Jarrett Metheral in a 10-9 shootout victory over the host Saskatoon Royals. Hunter Steinhubel scored five goals for Saskatoon.

Two goals by Regina-born Arthur Miller led the Estevan Bruins to a 6-3 SJHL victory over the Humboldt Broncos at Affinity Place on Saturday.

The Regina-born Miller, formerly of the Pat Canadians and the WHL’s Swift Current Broncos, has seven goals and four assists in nine games with Estevan.

Jayden Davis, Kaelan Holt, Jake Fletcher and TJ Irey also scored for Estevan. Stephen Wack led Humboldt with two goals.

Estevan moved into a tie with the Weyburn Red Wings for first place in the Viterra Division. Both teams have 15-7-2-0 records.

Weyburn lost 5-3 to the Battleford­s North Stars at Crescent Point Place on Saturday. Matthias Urbanski scored twice for Battleford­s. Tyran Brown, Jessie Young and Jordan Kazymyra replied for Weyburn.
