Sweep extends Cougars’ winning streak to five

The University of Regina Cougars men’s basketball team swept a weekend Canada West set with the University of Northern British Columbia Timberwolv­es in Prince George.

Regina won 80-76 on Friday before prevailing 96-88 on Saturday.

On Friday, Brandon Tull snapped a 76-76 tie by scoring a basket with 19 seconds left in the game. Tull led the Cougars with 16 points.

Shawn Lathan led the Cougars on Saturday with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Shaquille Harris also had 18 points for Regina (5-1), which extended its winning streak to five games.

The Cougars will play host to the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns in basketball action Friday and Saturday at the Centre for Kinesiolog­y, Health and Sport.

Women’s games tip off at 6 p.m., with the men to follow at 8 p.m.

Women’s basketball: The Cougars split a weekend set at UNBC, winning 88-53 on Friday before losing 81-79 on Saturday.

Carolina Goncalves led the U of R with 19 points in 20 minutes in the opener.

On Saturday, Kyanna Giles had 19 points and seven rebounds for Regina (5-1), which suffered its first loss of the season.

Including non-conference games, the Cougars had won 14 in a row.

Men’s hockey: The Cougars men’s hockey team split a weekend road set with the Calgary Dinos — the ninth-ranked team in the nation.

Zach McPhee scored the game-winner on Friday as the Cougars won 3-2. Calgary answered with a 3-2 victory on Saturday, leaving Regina with a 2-8-2 record.

Women’s hockey: Calgary defeated the Cougars 1-0 on Friday and then again on Saturday at the Co-operators Centre. Regina’s record is 4-6-1-1.

Wrestling: On Friday, the Cougars women’s wrestling team defeated Calgary 21-14 in a dual meet at the CKHS. The victorious U of R wrestlers were Amber Wiebe (51 kilograms), Tina Trombley (48kg), Erica Ravelo (55kg) and Maeghan Wild (63kg).

Women’s volleyball: Regina won a pair of matches against the Brandon Bobcats at the CKHS. The Cougars (5-5) won 25-21, 16-25, 25-19, 18-25, 1513 on Friday and 25-20, 25-23, 25-16 on Saturday.

Men’s volleyball: Brandon won both matches at the CKHS, sweeping the Cougars 25-15, 2521, 21-15 on Friday before winning 14-25, 25-23, 25-21, 21-25, 15-12. The Cougars are 1-9.
