Regina’s Englot breaks ice at Roar of the Rings

Regina’s Michelle Englot on Wednesday posted her first victory at Roar of the Rings — the Canadian Olympic curling trials — in Ottawa.

Englot and Winnipeg-based teammates Kate Cameron, Leslie Wilson and Raunora Westcott improved their record to 1-4 by posting an 8-5 victory over Julie Tippin of Owen Sound, Ont., in the afternoon draw. Englot meets Allison Flaxey of Caledon, Ont., in Thursday’s morning draw.

On the men’s side, Saskatoon’s Steve Laycock dropped to 2-4 on Wednesday morning by losing 10-4 to Mike McEwen of Winnipeg.

D’Sean Mimbs poured in 42 points to help the Winston Knoll Wolverines defeat the Martin Monarchs 83-80 in Regina Intercolle­giate Basketball League senior boys action Tuesday.

Kaleb Kardash-Drackett led Martin with 25 points.

In a junior boys game on Tuesday, Matthew Jickling scored 13 points for the Campbell Tartans in their 68-64 victory over the O’Neill Titans. O’Neill’s Noah Heszheimer scored a game-high 33 points. The 29th annual Fekula Senior Classic basketball tournament runs Thursday to Saturday at Balfour Collegiate.

The event will include a slam dunk and shooting competitio­n, set for Friday at 8 p.m.

The championsh­ip games are Saturday at 6:45 p.m. (senior girls) and 8:15 p.m. (senior boys).

Tristan Sulz had a goal and two assists to help the Extreme Hockey Regina Capitals edge the Assiniboia Southern Rebels 5-4 in Prairie Junior Hockey League action Tuesday at the Al Ritchie Memorial Centre.

Fraiser Belanger, Brayden Cockwill, Jarred Hicks and Taylor Neustaeter also scored for the Capitals. Dakota Helland, with three goals, and Tristin Rousseau replied for Assiniboia.

With 22 goals, Helland is one behind league leader Graham Cove of the Delisle Chiefs. Cove has played 20 games, three more than Helland.

Justen Close made 30 saves for the shutout as the Kindersley Klippers defeated the Notre Dame Hounds 3-0 in Tuesday’s SJHL game at Duncan McNeill Arena in Wilcox.
