Attempted child abduction reports prompt safety alert

-

After a series of recent reports of attempted child abduction, the Saskatchewan RCMP has issued a safety reminder.

Two of the three reports occurred on First Nation reserves, while investigation of a third, in Carlyle, has since determined nothing untoward occurred, according to an RCMP news release issued Friday.

On May 31, Southey RCMP began an investigation after several Facebook posts alleged an attempted child abduction on the Piapot First Nation on May 6. Investigators have located the alleged victim, a girl, and the investigation is continuing.

On May 29, Broadview RCMP responded to a reported attempted abduction of a 12-year-old girl on the Kahkewistahaw First Nation. The investigation is also ongoing.

Police do not believe the incidents are related.

On May 31, Carlyle RCMP got a report of two separate 10-year-old girls who had been approached by a man offering them a ride. Police conducted extensive patrols in the areas where the incidents were alleged to have occurred, but could not locate the vehicle or the suspect. Further investigation led police to determine those incidents did not occur.

The RCMP said it felt it was prudent to reiterate the importance of parents and guardians taking the time to speak with their children about safety. Some suggestions provided by the Mounties include:

Be aware of your surroundings and suspicious vehicles or people. Report them to teachers, parents or other trusted adults.

Listen to earbuds through one ear only, so you can hear traffic, people, dogs and other potential hazards.

Don’t approach a vehicle if you don’t know the person inside.

Don’t talk to strangers. Have a friend walk with you if possible. Stick to sidewalks along busy streets instead of cutting through alleys or parks.
