Home runs help power Canadians past Gold

The Moose Jaw Canadians got five home runs — including two each from Kent Barber and Dane Roy — en route to defeating the Regina Gold 9-2 in Western Cycle Rambler Park Fastball League action Thursday.

Riley Almasi also homered in support of winning pitcher Blake Dixon.

Also on Thursday, the Bulyea Rustlers shut out the Alpha Constructi­on Hawks 5-0 behind pitchers Greg Hill and Colin Mcleod; Darryl Callaghan homered for the Moose Jaw Giants and Tim Mccaig got the win in an 8-0 victory over the Pasqua A’s. And the Little Black Bear Blues downed the Piapot Padres 13-6.

The Regina Red Sox are preparing for three consecutiv­e Western Major Baseball League games against the Melville Millionair­es.

Regina and Melville are to meet at Pirie Field on Saturday (7 p.m.) and Sunday (2 p.m.) before opposing one another at Currie Field on Monday (7 p.m.).

The Red Sox are on a three-game losing streak after falling 9-0 to the host Swift Current 57s on Thursday.

Winning pitcher Joey Machado allowed three hits and two walks over six innings.

Blake Adams homered for Swift Current, which got three RBI from Bo Mcclintock. Brooks Sotler and Wesley Moss each had two hits for the Red Sox (20-12).

In Thursday’s other game at the Douglas Park diamonds, Genelle Sparvier got the win as Iskotew defeated the Rampage 15-2.

Open Golf Championsh­ip is to be held Monday and Tuesday.

Round 1 will be played at the Deer Valley Golf Course, beginning at 9 a.m. Round 2, at the Murray Municipal Golf Course, is to begin at8a.m.

The field is to include 47 golfers.

Saskatchew­an South is to meet

Quebec on Saturday in the goldmedal game at the Under-16 Eastern Challenge football tournament in Guelph, Ont.
