Reginans help Canada win water polo gold medal

Adrien Van Dyke and Blaire McDowell, both of Regina, helped Canada’s 19 and under women’s water polo team win the gold medal Sunday at the UANA Junior Pan American Championsh­ips in Clearwater, Fla.

Canada, which won all four of its games at the competitio­n, defeated the United States 18-9 in the championsh­ip final.

Mcdowell is a recent graduate of Martin Academy, where Van Dyke also studied before attending Oakland-based Cal State East Bay on a water polo scholarshi­p, where she is entering her sophomore year. Mcdowell is preparing for her first year at the University of Arizona.

The Regina Red Sox are to begin a four-game Alberta swing Tuesday against the Edmonton Prospects.

Regina will then oppose the Fort Mcmurray Giants on Wednesday and Thursday before playing in Edmonton again on Friday. Regina was to play host to the Melville Millionair­es on Monday night.

On Sunday, Nik Pagan’s seventhinn­ing grand-slam homer powered the Millionair­es to a 16-9 victory over the visiting Red Sox. Phil Langlois had his 10th home run of the season for Regina, which got three hits from Adam De La Cruz.

The Regina Piranhas took part in two invitation­al swim meets on the weekend. On Saturday in Weyburn, the Piranhas’ Adrien Lapierre finished first in his age group ( boys nine-10) in aggregate points. Silver medals went to Luke Binns ( boys nine-10), Gavriel Moroz ( boys 13-14), Simone Lapierre and Jane Moser (tied for second in girls 11-12) and Josie Sylvestre (girls 15-17). On Sunday in Assiniboia, Adrien Lapierre won another gold medal. Binns, Sylvestre and Simone Lapierre repeated as silver medallists. Moser earned a bronze.

Saskatchew­an defeated Manitoba 48-6 on Monday at the Football Canada Cup in Calgary. Saskatchew­an’s game MVPS were quarterbac­k Keegan Kaytor (offence) and linebacker Jaxon Runge (defence), both of Regina.
