Broadview School affected by U.s.-based threats

- AUSTIN M. DAVIS

Broadview School was placed in hold and secure mode as a result of social-media threats when members of the local RCMP detachment determined there was no threat made by or to any student at the kindergarten to Grade 12 school.

After receiving an initial complaint at 9:30 Tuesday morning, Broadview RCMP were able to determine that the post being referenced was regarding a high school in Georgia.

The incident was resolved by 11:30 a.m.

It was the second reported incident in 24 hours of a Saskatchewan school being alerted to threatening social-media posts. Saskatoon police received multiple complaints of a similar nature at 7:30 Monday night before discussions with American authorities confirmed the message was related to an incident in Brunswick, Glynn County, Ga., that occurred earlier that same day.

Saskatoon Police determined there was no threat to any school in Saskatoon.

While these are the only two known incidents in Saskatchewan related to that event, multiple schools in the U.S. were affected by the threat.

According to local news reports, a 16-year-old Georgia high-school student was arrested Monday on suspicion of making threats against the school using a cellphone, according to the Glynn County Police Department.

He was charged with making terroristic threats and disruption of a public school.

Police said the student used the “Airdrop” feature on a smartphone to send an anonymous message to students that said a school shooting would take place that day.

In addition to local and state police resources, the FBI, ICE and the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were involved in the response.

Broadview is about 150 kilometres east of Regina.
