Rams must refocus after sloppy loss to Huskies
The University of Regina Rams need to regroup after Friday’s 3320 Canada West football loss to the University of Saskatchewan Huskies.
Regina trailed 30-3 in the third quarter before making the score respectable.
After the Rams’ record dropped to 2-2, head coach Steve Bryce addressed his players on the field at Griffiths Stadium.
“I said, ‘We’re too good a team to play like this,’” Bryce told Kevin Mitchell of the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix.
“I said, ‘We’re too good a team to spot teams 20-some points in the first half.’ This is a talented group of guys that can go the distance, and we’re not going to do that if we keep making mistakes the way we’re doing.
“We’ve got to refocus. We’ve got to come back and do things differently.”
Regina rallied with two touchdowns and a field goal in a 6:39 span in the second half, and was driving again when Bowan Lewis intercepted Noah Picton in the end zone.
The Huskies (3-1) then embarked on an eight-play, 72-yard drive that ended with a field goal and completely killed Regina’s momentum.
The Rams got touchdown runs of two and 27 yards from Kyle Borsa. Picton threw for 271 yards and three interceptions. His favourite target, Kyle Moortgat, caught nine passes for 136 yards.
“We moved the ball, and we got in the red zone, and we weren’t able to execute and come away with points,” Bryce said. “Five trips to the red zone and one score, and that’s not good enough. I think we’re a better football team than this.”
The Rams return to action Saturday in Winnipeg against the University of Manitoba Bisons.
Picton needs 276 passing yards to become U Sports’ all-time leader. He is chasing former Sherbrooke star Jérémi Roch’s total of 11,477 yards.
The Saskatoon Hilltops doubled the visiting Regina Thunder 4824 in PFC action Saturday.
The Thunder (2-3) led 17-16 late in the second quarter, but Saskatoon scored the next 32 points to improve to 5-0.
The Leboldus Golden Suns defeated the O’neill Titans 24-6 in Regina Intercollegiate Football League action Friday.
Jerry Wiebe caught four passes for 133 yards and two touchdowns, including a 90-yarder. The Golden Suns’ Ryker Frank ran 22 times for 195 yards, including an 89-yard major.
Jace Carlisle of Estevan (male) and Lauren Fox of Creighton (female) were the individual winners at the Saskatchewan High Schools Athletic Association golf championships Saturday in North Battleford.
