What’s on in Regina: Sept. 27-Oct. 3

If you like indie piano pop or Americana, you may like Leeroy Stagger, who fits not quite in any genre. Or maybe you’ve heard of him already, since he’s currently touring his ninth album, Love Versus. Mariel Buckley is on the bill too, in all her rootsy excellence. The show starts at 8 p.m. Thursday at the Artesian, and tickets are $15.

Culture Days is on across Saskatchew­an on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. There are too many events to list, so best check out sk.cultureday­s.ca for more informatio­n.

Dance parties to retro music are awesome. Dance parties in period costumes and prom dresses are even better. CJTR’S fundraiser party Dance Through The Decades promises both, with some of your favourite local radio hosts Djing an hour of music from each decade (1950s to present). The family-friendly party begins at 6 p.m. on Friday at the Exchange (Club side), with music from the nifty ’50s starting off the night. Admission is free (although, CJTR is in the midst of its annual Radiothon fundraiser, so donations are probably welcome).

Excuse Beach Body and Del Suelo if their yacht-rock vibes drift over to the dance party. These two local bands are performing in the Exchange’s bigger room to celebrate Del Suelo’s latest book/record release, The Musician’s Compass. That show starts at 8 p.m. on Friday, with Nate Hilts of The Dead South opening. Admission is $10.

The third Pile of Bones Undergroun­d Film Festival is celebratin­g offbeat and unique films from Regina and around the world, with production­s ranging from three to 19 minutes long. Starts at 8 p.m. Friday at the Artesian. Tickets are $10.

Some jazzy Torontonia­ns will perform Friday, 8 p.m., at Le Bistro. The Carn Davidson 9 rounds up the numbers of its touring quintet with some local guest performers: Trent Reschny on tenor saxophone, Kevin Turcotte on trumpet, Carter Powley on baritone sax, and Spencer Krips on bass trombone. Tickets are $30.

The Pinc Lincolns provide music to mellow out to, at T+A Vinyl and Fashion. Doors at 8 p.m., show at 9 p.m. Ygretz and Keiran Semple are opening.

The Steadies bring their ska/ reggae/rock sound to Revival Music Room. Music starts at 9 p.m. Friday and admission is $10.

If noisy punk rock is more your thing, look no further than The Mercury, where The Faps, Spoils, Dream Creeps and Mechadroid are playing. Show starts around 9:30 p.m., and admission is $10.

Art takes over Victoria Park during Nuit Blanche, which runs 7 p.m. to midnight on Saturday. Saskatchew­an artists and performers will be creating theatre, dance, music, spoken word and sculpture to create “a vibrant and glowing space at night.”

Valerie Hall joins the Regina Symphony Orchestra at Government House in a celebratio­n of baroque music. There are two shows — Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets are approximat­ely $52 and available at reginasymp­hony.com.

Cadence Weapon has been nominated for the Polaris Prize, he was the poet laureate for Edmonton, and he raps about a range of subjects (including hockey players, gentrifica­tion and racism). He’ll be at the Exchange on Tuesday. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $20 at the door. Fat Tony, Hua Li and LOA open the show.

The songs of Leonard Cohen set the soundtrack to Dance Me, a performanc­e by Les Ballets Jazz de Montréal. It “evokes the grand cycles of existence in five seasons, as described in Cohen’s deeply reflective music and poems.” The show starts at 7:30 p.m. at the Conexus Arts Centre, and tickets start at $43.

Merkules headlines a hip-hop show at the Exchange Wednesday at 8 p.m. Tickets to the all-ages show are $35. Check him out — there’s a reason the guy has hundreds of thousands of Youtube clicks.

Regina Little Theatre opens its 2018-19 season with The Lost Boy on Wednesday, Oct. 3. Support local theatre, and maybe leave inspired to put down your iphone and use your imaginatio­n! Show starts at 7:30 p.m. at the Regina Performing Arts Centre, 1077 Angus St. Tickets are $23 for adults and $21 for everyone else.

The Queer Songbook Orchestra — led by former Reginan Shaun Brodie — presents a night of pop music and heartfelt stories on Wednesday at the Artesian. Show starts at 8 p.m. Tickets are $27 at the door, or $22 in advance.
