SATURDAY, OCTOBER 13, 2018 A Lunar Cautionary Tale

When a need is real, it’s a serious matter. And even when it’s not quite real, it can feel serious, which is a trap. We rarely need what we think we need. Mostly, we merely prefer a thing and then our mind gets to work on amping up the stakes until we think we just won’t be the same without it -- a pattern highlighted by the moon square Neptune.

ARIES (March 21-April 19). You add a dash of humor and stir in some charm. You’ll meet those with opposing views, but you’ll make your differences a moot point. It’s a lucky attitude, and it’s the reason you’re winning.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20). Small kindnesses shown to loved ones in daily domestic settings are the mark of a genuinely loving heart. Big gestures that the world can see might seem to matter more, but really they don’t.

GEMINI (May 21-June 21). The biggest obstacle to true love is mistaken identity. It’s why you don’t assume to know who you’re dealing with. You’ve learned people aren’t always who you want them to be. So you learn who they are, and love that person.

CANCER (June 22-July 22). Your standards are high, and you’ll have to put in many hours to bring the vision alive. This has not stopped you from being a playful person. Your creativity will shine.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). Even though you love to learn, sometimes you just wish you could get the skills and information you need a lot faster. Maybe you can. Better methods are out there. Investigate.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). The ideas just keep coming! This inspiration will continue all through the weekend. One caution -- before you go public with your brainchildren, double check to be sure that you are their actual, original parent.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). Getting what you wish for -- that’s tricky business. Pay attention to all that happens during and immediately after you’re holding what you want. What’s the feeling in your gut saying?

SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). Though you can’t handle every piece of minutia about life, you still need to give the impression that you’re looking out for your own interests. Anyone doing this for you will be less invested in the outcome than you are.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). You have the power to take hold of your routine and shake it up. The benefit to this (even if you only do it for a day or a few hours) is that you’ll see a way to save yourself some trouble and time.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). Even though you may like what you’re doing, this is the moment to think about the projects you’d like to be involved in. Fantasize! What if you could really do anything? The exercise will improve next week’s mood and flow.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). You like knowing that you have a support system and friends that stand behind you. However, you don’t actually want them to do this when you don’t need it. Don’t feel guilty about needing your space right now.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). You feel somehow healthier and more full of life around a certain person. That’s because you actually are. Good relationships change you physically for the better.

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY (Oct. 13). You’ll impress a VIP this year, and that very important person is you. Really, when you look back 12 months from now, you’ll be astounded at your fortitude. Highlights include a risky power play that pays off, a new hobby that grows your mind and a publication or public appearance that helps your career. Scorpio and Aries adore you. Your lucky numbers are: 5, 33, 29, 22 and 15.

ASTROLOGICAL QUESTIONS: “Do you believe in affirmations? What are they exactly? Do they work? If so, what affirmations will help an Aries like me?”

Affirmations are a style of self-talk used as a communication bridge between the conscious mind and the subconscious. The goal of affirmations is to impress the subconscious mind with the messages it would need to believe to achieve a desired result. Whether affirmations work or not depends largely on whether you believe they will, as well as the intensity and frequency in which they are used. The three times of day that pack the most power into your affirmations are before you fall asleep, right after you wake up and during meditation. An effective affirmation for Aries will change as your needs and circumstances change. Finding the best affirmation for the moment is as easy as naming your most pressing problem or dissatisfaction within yourself and creating an affirmation to counteract it. For instance, if you, like many Aries, are working too hard and stressed out, a good affirmation might be “I only take on what I can comfortably, happily handle,” or “I have a light heart and laugh often” or “My perspective keeps me positive.”

CELEBRITY PROFILES: Music legend and 12-time Grammy winner Paul Simon has announced his retirement from touring, but he has said he anticipates the occasional performing appearance, especially to raise money for charities that benefit ecological causes. Simon was born when the sun was in harmonious Libra and the moon was in soulful Cancer.

SUNDAY, OCTBER 14, 2018 Capricorn Moon and Power

Who is the authority in your life? You... even though it doesn’t always feel that way. This Capricorn moon allows for greater understanding of the power structures erected in a life, specifically which “beams” are really holding things up, and which are merely cosmetic. Change is coming and this information will be crucial in the rebuild.

ARIES (March 21-April 19). You’ll have the desire and the means to improve. The “means” does not always have to be money. Where the financial part of it falls short, ideas will bridge the gap.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20). Telling tends to control conversation whereas asking questions tends to open conversation up to a flow of ideas. Today, you’ll ask a particularly good question and it will change everything.

GEMINI (May 21-June 21). There’s energy afoot, giddy, mischievous, fearless... and it’s sure to bring some fun into your world. Someone who loves you also loves that you get into these kinds of moods.

CANCER (June 22-July 22). Something isn’t working. An upgrade will fix it, and there will be many options to consider. As long as you’re thinking improvement, you may as well think outrageous, extreme makeover.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). You’ll be invited to join a small group of decision-makers. What happens in the room will be important, so prepare yourself beforehand. Do what you need to do to become centered, calm and collected.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). You’re so full of ideas that it would be easy to overwhelm people with too much information or too many ideas and suggestions. Write all your ideas down and save them. Share only a few today -- just enough to get things started.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). Groups have missions and organizational priorities that often go unstated. They may even be unconscious, but they exist. Look for them. It’s a good day to ask yourself, “What is this group really about? And, am I about that, too?”

SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). It will be tempting to stick to a delusion. It is, after all, the way you’d prefer things to be. But you’re ready and willing to let go of all that in order to see the truth of a matter.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). There’s something you really wanted for yourself but you thought you didn’t have the time. That turns out not to be true. There’s a way to rearrange your life and make this work.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). You’ll be looking ahead with the realization that there’s still quite a lot you’d like to accomplish by the end of the year. This has a way of organizing your mind. Priorities will naturally shuffle into good order.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). A group that’s too familiar will inevitably be a bit dull. It’s time for an infusion of new blood. You’re the best one to do this because you have a knack for mixing and matching people right now.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). People crave a story that makes sense and comes to them fully formed. They will usually prefer this to being presented with a number of random truths that they have to figure out what to do with.

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY (Oct. 14). A stroke of luck at the top of this solar return -- you stumble on something you feel you were meant to do and the passion continues for years to come. More excitement: a wonderfilled visit that alters your world view, an endowment to apply to your new interest and an alliance that changes your work picture. Leo and Sagittarius adore you. Your lucky numbers are: 8, 40, 4, 28 and 17.

FORECAST FOR THE WEEK AHEAD: Mercury poses a riddle: What is more valuable than gold, more elusive than rainbows and more magical and mythical than unicorn tears? Answer: the right words. The right words can open doors, hearts, minds, maybe even the heavens. The right words can close gaps between people, leverage an individual out of a jam, change the trajectory of nations. While it may be true that language is imperfect, everchanging and perhaps at best a very loose representation of our feelings, sensations, observations and needs, it may also be true that it’s among the top powerful tools we as humans possess... if we can only find the right words.

Mercury the messenger helps with that quest, kicking it off with a conjunction to Venus that gets communication and intention lined up as neatly as possible. Brevity will be key. While saying more may give greater breadth to a message, it will also disperse its power. Say less and you’re more likely to be listened to. Make your messages user-friendly. Give the listener a win off the bat.

Friday, Mars gets involved, probably uncomfortably so. It wouldn’t hurt to seek skills of conflict resolution. Those who know how to de-escalate heated interactions could save the day.

CELEBRITY PROFILES: After a long string of playing literary heroines, Mia Wasikowska seeks variety with a film schedule that includes a movie about puppeteers, a heart-wrenching drama with Kate Winslet and Susan Sarandon and a bizarre horror flick. Wasikowska was born when the sun, Mercury and Mars were all in artistic Libra. The moon and Venus in fire signs brings passion to the cosmic blueprint.
