Reginan wins U-18 crosscount­ry nationals

Ron Maclean of Regina won the under-18 boys title Saturday at the Canadian cross-country championsh­ips in Kingston, Ont.

“It’s the biggest accomplish­ment of my track career so far, but I’m still hungry for more this track season and the seasons to come,” said Maclean, who completed the six-kilometre course in 19 minutes 3.09 seconds.

Maclean, who is in Grade 12 at Sheldon-williams Collegiate, was among 250 competitor­s.

“I had a pretty good feeling I could win, but I was shooting for top-five,” he said.

“I had a huge smile on my face as I broke the tape. I even celebrated a little bit. I was happy all my hard work had paid off.”

Maclean also helped Saskatchew­an win the territoria­l gold medal in his age category. Saskatoon’s Moktar Said was fourth (19:18.9) in the event won by Maclean.

Chantel Weller made 16 saves for the shutout as the Regina Rebels defeated the Weyburn Richardson Pioneer Gold Wings 3-0 in Saskatchew­an Female Midget AAA Hockey League action Saturday at Crescent Point Place.

Samantha Sichkaruk, Neena Brick and Allee Gerrard scored against Weyburn’s Amara Lewendon, who made 52 saves.

Regina (9-2-1-0) is in second place, behind the Saskatoon Stars (11-0-1-0).

Max Kotyk and Carter Belitski each had two goals for the Regina Pat Canadians on Saturday in their 8-3 Saskatchew­an Midget AAA Hockey League victory over the Saskatoon Contacts.

Jack Glen, Cole Sillinger, Adam Kydd and Luc Marleau also scored for the Pat Canadians (12-3-2-2) at the Co-operators Centre.

Davin Griffin, with two goals, and Jaeden Mercier replied for Saskatoon (11-7-0-0).

Riley Christison made 31 saves for the shutout as the Traveland RV Storm blanked the host Prince Albert Titans 7-0 in Prairie Junior Hockey League action Saturday.

Jarvis Gelowitz (two goals, two assists) and Taylor Halbgewach­s (one goal, three assists) each had four-point performanc­es.

Keigan Callander (two goals, one assist), Keagen Jacksteit (one goal, two assists) and Taylor Schmidt (one goal, two assists) added three-point showings.

The Storm (14-4-0-0) leads the Bill Johnston Division with 28 points, two more than the Extreme Hockey Regina Capitals (13-5-0-0).

Aiden Bulych had a goal and two assists for the Yorkton Terriers in their 5-3 Saskatchew­an Junior Hockey League victory over the Humboldt Broncos on Saturday at Farrell Agencies Arena.

Colby Brandt, Branden Klatt, Cody Bruchkowsk­i and Jared Legien also scored for Yorkton (14-10-1-0), which got 37 saves from Ryan Ouellette en route to assuming sole possession of first place in the Viterra Division.

Drew Warkentine, with two goals, and Owen Guenter scored for Humboldt (19-7-2-1), which leads the Global Ag Risk Solutions Division.
