Women’s hockey Cougars aim to close out 2018 on a high note

The University of Regina Cougars women’s hockey team is carrying a 5-6-1-2 record into its final weekend set of 2018.

The Cougars are coming off Canada West losses of 3-0 (on Friday) and 2-1 (in a shootout Saturday) to the UBC Thunderbir­ds at the Co-operators Centre.

Emma Hall was the only player to score during the three-round shootout.

Kenzie Robinson scored in regulation time for UBC (6-2-3-3). Emma Waldenberg­er replied for Regina, which got 30 saves from Jane Kish. UBC’S Tory Micklash stopped 27 shots.

On Friday, Micklash made 22 saves for the shutout. Robinson, Emily Costales and Brie Bellerive were the goal scorers.

Next up for the U of R is a trip to Calgary for games Friday and Saturday against the Mount Royal Cougars.

UBC swept the visiting Cougars in men’s hockey on the weekend.

On Friday, Maxwell James had two goals as the Thunderbir­ds won 2-1. Tyler King replied for Regina.

The following afternoon, Tanner Faith, Riley Guenther, Matt Revel, Tyler Sandhu and Jerret Smith scored for the Thunderbir­ds (95-0) in their 5-3 win. Ben Duperreaul­t, with two goals, and Tristan Frei countered for the Cougars (211-1). The Cougars are to play host to Mount Royal on Friday (7 p.m.) and Saturday (3 p.m.) at the Cooperator­s Centre.
