Charges against officer adjourned
Assaults alleged to have occurred in detention area of police HQ
Charges against Regina police officer Cpl. Colin Bradley Magee were simply adjourned during a first appearance in Regina provincial court on Monday.
Magee, a 17-year member of the Regina Police Service, did not personally attend court, but his lawyer spoke on his behalf and adjourned the two common assault charges to June 17. Police announced last month that the 46-year-old officer had been charged as a result of investigations by the Public Complaints Commission (PCC).
The assaults allegedly occurred in September 2018 in the detention area at Regina police headquarters. One involved an adult man, and the other involved a teen boy under the age of 18.
The Crown prosecutor told the court it will proceed on the charges by indictment, or the more serious means, opening the door to higher penalties.
At a news conference after the charges were announced, RPS Chief Evan Bray said Magee had been moved to the detention area around January of 2018, which Bray says he believed was a task they could move Magee to from administrative duties, as a prior criminal charge against him was going to mediation.
“(And) ultimately, it’s an area where we’ve got audio and video monitoring, and so if something came up we could review it. And unfortunately something did,” Bray said.
Prior to the most recent alleged assaults, Magee was charged with assault in December 2016, but the charge was stayed in December 2018 following mediation.
Magee has been reassigned to administrative duties, which do not involve contact with the public, pending the outcome of the new charges.
