Warriors hand Pats sixth straight loss

MOOSE JAW Carson Denomie must love playing the Regina Pats.

The 19-year-old continued a recent trend against his hometown team on Sunday afternoon, scoring an early goal that helped propel the Moose Jaw Warriors to a 3-0 decision at Mosaic Place.

Denomie has four goals this season — all of them coming in three meetings with the Pats.

The 19-year-old Regina product also had two goals and an assist in four games against the Blue and White last season after he was acquired on Jan. 10 from the Kamloops Blazers.

Denomie’s Warriors (4-10) were well rested for Sunday’s matchup, courtesy of a seven-day break following back-to-back wins over the Brandon Wheat Kings.

The Pats (1-6-0) were playing their third game in three days. It showed as the visitors were outshot 12-1 in the first period and outscored 3-0 on goals by Owen Hardy, Denomie (power play) and Eric Alarie.

The Pats settled down in the second period — outshooting Moose Jaw 11-3 — but they couldn’t break the goose egg against goaltender Bailey Brkin.

The visitors continued to push early in the final frame, only to have their momentum stall due to a two-man disadvantage. Goalie Max Paddock stood tall in helping his team kill off the penalties but it was Brkin who ultimately emerged victorious with a 19-save shutout.

The Pats were outshot 25-19, marking the second straight game they were held under 20. The other was a 13shot effort Saturday in a 6-0 loss in Prince Albert.

Regina plays its fourth game in five days on Tuesday (7 p.m., Brandt Centre) against the Central Division-leading Edmonton Oil Kings (4-1-2).
