-

The Regina Thunder scored 37 unanswered points en route to defeating the Calgary Colts 37-9 in Prairie Football Conference action Sunday at Leibel Field.

Regina is tied with the Edmonton Huskies, who also have a 5-2 record, for second place. The Saskatoon Hilltops (7-0) have clinched top spot.

Greg Lamb and Ethan Douglas each had two TDS for the Thunder. Lamb scored on two runs. Douglas scored on passes from Blake Scherle. Sean Renouf scored the Thunder’s other major, on a pass from fellow receiver Tanner Zaharia on a trick play.

The Regina squad completes its regular season next Sunday against the Winnipeg Rifles (1 p.m., Leibel Field). A Regina victory would clinch second spot.

The University of Regina Rams’ losing streak swelled to five games Friday when they lost 33-28 to the UBC Thunderbirds in Canada West football action at Mosaic Stadium.

In the waning seconds, the Rams drove down to UBC’S 18-yard line before James Vause intercepted rookie quarterback Bryden O’flaherty in the end zone.

Friday’s outcome left the Rams and UBC with 1-5 records. Although the Thunderbirds have been eliminated from playoff contention, the Rams still have a glimmer of hope.

They need to win each of their final two regular-season games — Oct. 19 against the host University of Alberta Golden Bears and Oct. 25 against the visiting University of Manitoba Bisons — and get some help along the way.

The Balgonie Greenall Griffins are alone in first place in the Regina Intercollegiate Football League’s Stewart Conference after defeating the Balfour Bears 18-6 on Thursday.

The Griffins emerged with a 4-0 record. Balfour dropped to 3-1.

In Thursday’s other Stewart Conference game, the Martin Monarchs defeated the Luther Lions 36-7 on the strength of a spectacular performance from Lundyn Kups, who rushed for 296 yards and five touchdowns.

In Schwann Conference action Thursday, Riffel Royals defeated Sheldon-williams Spartans 37-13. Riffel (4-0) moved into a first-place tie with the Leboldus Golden Suns.

Riffel’s Hunter Bohay rushed for 123 yards and two TDS. He also scored on a 45-yard reception. The Royals’ Ashton Brandt threw for 204 yards and three majors.
