Cougars lose game in double overtime

An exciting ending was nonetheles­s to the University of Regina Cougars’ chagrin on Saturday.

The Cougars and University of Alberta Golden Bears went to double overtime in Canada West men’s basketball Saturday at the Centre for Kinesiolog­y, Health and Sport, where the visitors won 104-101.

A pair of Brayden Kuski free throws with 34 seconds left gave Regina a 101-99 lead, but Alberta answered with the final five points.

Andre Kelly hit a free throw with 22 seconds remaining. Dwan Williams followed with what proved to be a game-winning layup with six seconds on the clock. Ivan Ikomey added two free throws with one second left.

Cole Knudsen, whose father Bill is a Cougars alumnus, paced Alberta with 24 points.

Samuel Hillis led the Cougars with 25 points and 13 rebounds. Carter Millar added 16 points and 14 rebounds for the U of R, which dropped to 4-6. Alberta improved its record to 9-1.

Alberta opened the two-game set Friday by winning a 77-74 nail-biter. Greishe Clerjuste paced the

Cougars with 24 points. Millar had 16 points and 13 rebounds.

The Cougars women’s basketball team carries a 3-7 record into the Christmas break after backto-back home-court losses to the Alberta Pandas.

Alberta won 76-57 on Friday, when Emily Dewey (who had 12 points), Michaela Kleisinger (11) and Faith Reid (11) scored in double figures for the Cougars.

In Saturday’s finale, Alberta (8-2) won 63-57. Dewey (18), Kleisinger

(15) and Alexi Rowden (13) were the Cougars’ leading scorers.

In men’s hockey, the Cougars were swept by the host University of Calgary Dinos.

Calgary won 5-4 in a shootout on Friday. Regina trailed 4-2 after two periods, but back-to-back goals by Ben Duperreaul­t forced overtime. Michael Eskra and Tyler Kreklewich also scored for the Cougars.

The Dinos added a 4-2 win Saturday, leaving the Cougars (2-14) with a six-game losing streak.

Regina’s Ty Barnstable scored at 15:22 of the third to create a 2-2 tie, but James Shearer responded 35 seconds later for Calgary, which got an insurance tally from Tim Vanstone with one second left.

Calgary also swept the U of R in women’s hockey, winning 2-1 on Friday and 4-2 on Saturday at the Co-operators Centre.

Jordan Kulbida scored for the Cougars in the opener. Jaycee Magwood had both goals Saturday for Regina (6-10).

In women’s volleyball, the Cougars split a pair with the host University of Winnipeg Wesmen.

Regina won 25-25, 25-18, 25-23 on Friday to snap a nine-game losing streak. Winnipeg rebounded Saturday 25-12, 25-20, 25-18, leaving Regina at 2-10.
