U.S. MILITARY BANNED FROM HONG KONG VISITS

-

China has introduced sanctions against U.S. pro-democracy NGOS and restrictions on any American military presence in Hong Kong, after Donald Trump signed a bill supporting the city’s protesters.

China’s foreign ministry said Monday that U.S. military vessels and aircraft would not be able to visit Hong Kong.

The move followed Beijing’s threat to take “firm counter measures” if Trump signed the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act, which could lead to American sanctions on human rights violators in Hong Kong.

Hua Chunying, a Chinese foreign ministry spokesman, said: “We urge the U.S. to correct the mistakes and stop interfering in our internal affairs.”

Beijing announced that U.s.-based NGOS would be sanctioned, including Human Rights Watch, Freedom House and the National Endowment for Democracy.

Hua said the move was to make the organizations “pay the price” for supporting Hong Kong protesters.
