Manitoba company hit with $560,000 fine for Sask. job-site death
A 2017 workplace fatality near Eyebrow, in the province’s southwest, has resulted in a $560,000 fine for Manitoba company Langengurg Redi-mix Ltd.
The fine was imposed in Moose Jaw provincial court this week.
The charges stemmed from a Feb. 13, 2017, incident on a work site near Eyebrow.
Jesse Hoehn, 25, of Davidson, was fatally injured when a wheel loader rolled backwards, pinning the worker between the loader and another vehicle.
The company was found guilty of two violations of Occupational Health and Safety legislation during a previous court appearance on Sept. 23: “being an employer, failure to ensure, insofar as is reasonably practicable, the health, safety and welfare at work of all the employer’s workers, resulting in the death of a worker” and “being an employer, fail to ensure that all work at a place of employment is sufficiently and competently supervised, resulting in the death of a worker,” according

to a government news release issued Thursday.
Redi-mix Ltd. was fined $200,000 on each count, plus a surcharge of $160,000 for a total of $560,000.
“Labour Relations and Workplace Safety, in partnership with the Workers’ Compensation Board, supports and promotes Mission: Zero — zero workplace injuries, zero fatalities and zero suffering. We are all responsible for keeping ourselves and each other safe and healthy at work,” the release indicated.
