FIVE COMMON HOLIDAY GIFTS TO AVOID, AND WHAT TO GIVE INSTEAD.

-

If you’re still searching for that perfect gift, aim for a high-quality item in your budget that will last past the holidays. Oh, and do wrap it nicely. Here are five gift duds to avoid and what to give instead ...

1 SCENTED CANDLES

The candle craze shows no sign of burning out (ha), but it’s a forgettable gesture, and there’s a risk it will end up stashed with others in a random drawer. Opt for something aromatic and useful but more thought out. A high-quality olive oil in a beautiful bottle looks good on the counter and can help make delicious meals for family and friends.

2 MUGS

Does your recipient really need another mug? Unless it’s something particularly meaningful, skip it and look for another reusable item that won’t just sit on a shelf. A sturdy tote looks a lot better than a shopping bag and cuts down on plastic waste.

3 WINE

To make a bottle of wine a more effective gift, pick up the recipient’s favourite or something that feels more personal than the first bottle you saw on the way to the checkout aisle. But you could do better. A kit of cocktail blenders, bitters or other mix-ins is endlessly customizable and brings multiple people in on the fun.

4 WINTER ACCESSORIES

Hats, gloves and scarves usually line department store shelves this time of year, sometimes at a discount. But a low-quality set doesn’t do much good. A zany pattern might limit your giftee’s ability to match it to their wardrobe, too. If you must, go with neutral patterns and colours. Alternatively, a throw blanket adds coziness and warmth, and because it will probably stay at home, the pressure is off to match to the recipient’s fashion taste.

5 CANDY

Few people lack sweets during the holiday season, so don’t add to someone’s crowded pile of candies and cookies unless you give something special and interesting. A riff on an old favourite from a small or local bakery works better.
