Young father of six homicide victim

The night before he died, the couple discussed their future. They had been looking at houses in the city’s north end. The move was meant to help Keenan get farther away from drugs. Keenan was adamant he wanted to change. He wanted to start working and buy a vehicle.

Kequahtooway said it was one of the most intense talks they ever had. She believes it was finally their chance to get everything on track.

Things had been rocky with Keenan’s drug addiction, and he would get frustrated.

“He wanted to turn everything around,” said Kequahtooway.

Keenan got on his bicycle around 3 a.m. He was off to buy some marijuana. As he said goodbye, Kequahtooway and Keenan told each other “I love you.”

Kequahtooway waited up for him, sending messages but getting no response. Just after 8:30 a.m., police from the RPS major crimes section knocked on her door. She recalled the “ugly feeling” of opening it, then ran to get Keenan’s mother.

“It was the hardest thing to ever hear,” she said.

Kequahtooway said her older children cried all day when they got the news.

Any plans Kequahtooway had to move are gone now. She’s not sure if she’ll ever be able to leave the home she shared with Keenan. She and Trenna had considered calling off Christmas celebrations, but decided to go ahead for the sake of the children. The Friday before he died, Keenan had bought the top item on Zulay’s wish list.

“We came to our senses and realized he’d want us to have a Christmas for the kids,” said Trenna.

Trenna is thankful her son had Kequahtooway in his life, referring to her as Keenan’s best friend.

“She gave my son everything that a person can give in a lifetime. All of those five years, he knew love and he got the experience of being a father,” said Trenna.

Keenan’s death remains under investigation by the RPS, which is working with the Coroner’s Service of Saskatchewan. Anyone with information that could help police can contact the RPS at 306-777-6500 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
