Former WHLER Nagel joins Regina Cougars

Former Swift Current Broncos captain Tanner Nagel has joined the University of Regina Cougars men’s hockey team for the second half of the 2019-20 Canada West season.

The Mossbank-born right-winger played for the Broncos, Portland Winterhawk­s and Lethbridge Hurricanes over four seasons in the WHL, registerin­g 29 goals and 22 assists in 232 regular-season games.

He helped Swift Current win the league title in 2018 and was the team’s captain as a 20-year-old the following season.

“Tanner comes to us with a ton of great qualities as a player and as a leader,” Cougars head coach Todd Johnson said in a media release. “He plays extremely hard and will add to our special teams in a huge way.”

Chantz Petruic scored two goals

— increasing his Saskatchew­an Junior Hockey League-leading total to 44 — Saturday to help the Yorkton Terriers defeat the host Estevan Bruins 5-2.

Petruic also had two assists while fattening his league-best points total to 79, compiled in only 39 games.

Keenan Taphorn (one goal, three assists) and Kaeden Taphorn (two goals) also had big nights as Yorkton, which leads the Viterra Division, improved its record to 23-151-0. Eddie Gallagher scored both of Estevan’s goals.

Also on Saturday, clutch contributi­ons by Aaron Greyeyes were the difference as the La Ronge Ice Wolves defeated the host Flin Flon Bombers 7-6 in overtime.

Flin Flon carried a 6-4 lead into the final minute of the third period before Greyeyes assisted on a goal by Kevin Fillier (who scored with 50 seconds left). Greyeyes then scored with eight seconds left to force overtime, which ended at 3:15 with his 15th goal of the season.

In Saturday’s other game, Ross Hawryluk made 24 saves for the shutout as the Nipawin Hawks downed the visiting Melfort Mustangs 2-0. Austen Flaman (who is from Emerald Park) and Jeremy Bisson (Moose Jaw) scored goals.

Chantel Weller registered the shutout as the Regina Rebels blanked the host Saskatoon Stars 7-0 Saturday in Saskatchew­an Female Midget AAA Hockey League action.

Sydney Pedersen had one goal and four assists. Alexis Petford added two goals and one helper. Emma Decorby, Neena Brick, Hanna Bailey and Molly Flynn were the other goal-scorers.

On Sunday, the Rebels improved their league-best record to 13-0-1-1 by defeating the host Prince Albert Northern Bears 5-2.

Brick, Shaelyn Myers, Megan Hayhurst, Allee Gerrard and Lauren Focht scored for Regina. Paris Oleksyn had both goals for Prince Albert.

Brick leads the league in goals (17) and points (33) after 15 games.

Bradley Sentes made 41 saves to backstop the Regina Silver Foxes to a 3-1 Prairie Junior Hockey League victory over Fort Knox Saturday at the Fort Qu’appelle Rexentre.

Jacob Belton, with two goals, and Jordan Yeske tallied for the Silver Foxes. Matthew Plews replied for Fort Knox, which got 19 saves from Jakob Taylor.

Also Saturday, a 41-save effort by Riley Christison backstoppe­d the Triple Seven Chrysler Storm to a 6-2 victory over the Prince Albert Titans at Pilot Butte Recreation Centre.

Connor Nagel, Taylor Schmidt, Caleb Petrie, Jaxon Henry, Matt Mccaw and Bryce Cockwill scored for the Storm. Joel Robinson and Kevin Ledoux answered for Fort Knox.

On Sunday, two-goal performanc­es by Matt Kesslering, Todd Johnson and Kyle Colwell helped the Extreme Hockey Regina Capitals defeat the Prince Albert Titans 8-1 at Al Ritchie Memorial Centre.

The Capitals also got a goal and two assists from Fraiser Belanger and four assists from Taylor Kreutzer while improving their Bill Johnston Division-leading record to 21-2-0-0.

Daniel Wasylyshyn had the Capitals’ other goal. Kevin Ledoux scored for Prince Albert.
