Roughriders sign four defensive players
The CFL’S Saskatchewan Roughriders announced the signings of four American defensive players on Wednesday.
Signed were defensive back Hamp Cheevers and defensive linemen Demetrius Harris, Kelcy Quarles and Cory Thomas.
Cheevers joins the Riders after 2019 off-season stints with the NFL’S Atlanta Falcons, Oakland Raiders and Tennessee Titans. He was undrafted after declaring his NFL eligibility following his junior season (2018) at Boston College.
Harris was named the 2019 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference defensive player of the year after registering 43 defensive tackles and 13 ½ sacks with Fort Valley State University.
Quarles spent a portion of the 2019 season on the Edmonton Eskimos’ practice roster. He also had stints with New York Giants, New England Patriots and Indianapolis Colts before joining the Eskimos.
Thomas spent the 2019 NFL pre-season with the Miami Dolphins. The product of Mississippi
State was released after the pre-season.
Fynlea Carter scored 25 points to lead the Campbell Tartans to a 59-49 victory over the Sheldon-williams Spartans in Regina Intercollegiate Basketball League junior girls action Tuesday.
Mckinley Moroz led Sheldon with 12 points.
In a junior boys game, Emmanual Duku scored 13 points for Sheldon in its 61-54 victory over
Campbell. The Tartans’ Kayhl Patel scored a game-high 18 points.
Tian Rask had two goals and an assist as the Melfort Mustangs recorded a 4-1 Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League victory over the visiting Weyburn Red Wings on Tuesday. Liam Rutten scored for the Red Wings.
Also on Tuesday, Greyson Stewart snapped a 3-3 tie at 7:31 of the third period as the Nipawin Hawks edged the visiting Estevan Bruins 4-3.
Nipawin’s Dawson Mckenzie had two goals, as did Estevan’s Brady Nicholas.
In Tuesday’s other game, Brett Neumeier scored at 2:09 of overtime to give the host Kindersley
Klippers a 3-2 victory over the Humboldt Broncos.
The Extreme Hockey Regina Capitals improved their Prairie Junior Hockey League-leading record to 29-3-0-0 on Tuesday by defeating Fort Knox 3-1 at the Al Ritchie Memorial Centre. Matt Kesslering, Kyle Colwell and Tristan Sulz scored for the Capitals. Sebastien Archembault replied for Fort Knox.
