Free Label fashions make sustainable statement
Jess Sternberg believes in the power of sustainable fashion. And she’s built an online community of others who share her mindset through her brand Free Label.
The company, which creates its garments using primarily Canadian textiles, aims to offer size-inclusive “ethical” designs that can be worn on repeat for years to come.
We caught up with Sternberg, the brand’s owner, to learn more.
Q What is Free Label?
A Free Label is an ethical and sustainable clothing brand that manufactures in small batches in Vancouver. We employ family-owned small factories and home sewers to cut and sew all our garments. And most of our fabric is custom knit in Canada.
Q Who is the target customer? A Our community is incredibly inclusive and diverse. We have customers that range in age from 20 to 65-plus, and our clothing line goes up to 4X, so we also serve a wide range of shapes and sizes.
Q What makes it unique from other clothing brands?
A The community. Free Label was hugely built on Instagram @free.label, where we have cultivated an incredibly supportive community. Most of our decisions are driven by our community — what fabrics we use, the colours we choose.
Q Is there a “hero” piece in the collection?
A Definitely the Andie Bra. I’ve been making it for three years now, and it’s garnered a kind of cult following over time. It’s a double layered, super comfortable and reversible bralette that can be worn under clothes as a bra, or on its own as a crop top. It offers surprising support and lift, while feeling like you aren’t wearing a bra at all.
Q What is the price range of Free Label pieces?
A Our Supima Cotton tops start at $68, with linen styles pricing closer to $100. Our bras are $89, and bottoms range from $138 to $179. I try to keep all my prices under $200, which is challenging when everyone in the supply chain is being paid a fair wage.
Q Where can we find them?
A You can shop Free Label from anywhere in the world at freelabel.com. All our prices are in Canadian dollars and we offer free shipping in North America on orders over $200.
