Thirteen-year-old Andrea is in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan for a family wedding, and she is not happy about being there. She is missing a wonderful opportunity to go on a bicycle trip in the mountains with her classmates. On top of that, Andrea has been given a role to play at the wedding ceremony — junior bridesmaid — she doesn't even know what that means!
While visiting with her family at the wedding rehearsal banquet, Andrea mysteriously falls back in time to the 1920s in Moose Jaw. She discovers that she is in tunnels which run under the train station and the streets of Moose Jaw. She meets a strange boy named Vance who wants her to run errands in the tunnels, for gangsters!
Andrea is skeptical until she has a dangerous encounter with a mean-looking gangster who threatens her. Suddenly Andrea realizes that she is in a lot of trouble. She doesn't know how she can stay safe while she searches for a way back to the present. On top of that, the gangsters are forcing her to work for them.
What will happen to Andrea? Will she have to survive in the 1920s forever?
Tunnels of Time was originally published many years ago, and it became a Canadian children's best-seller. The 20th anniversary seemed like a good time to update the book.
This revised edition has shorter chapters and the addition of resources such as historical notes, an interview with the author and discussion questions which can be used in the classroom or your living room as you read with your children.
We have added 12 beautiful illustrations and a brand new, exciting cover by artist Wendi Nordell. Tunnels of Time would make a great gift for any child as a readaloud. It is aimed at readers who are nine to 14 years of age, although many adults admit to reading and enjoying the book. I hope you enjoy reading it, too!
