View Pine Lodge move as positive
I am writing this letter as a former director of the Western Recovery/turning Point Association of B.C. We have operated six treatment centres in metro Vancouver for many years. (The first, still in operation, is located one block from Vancouver City Hall.)
I noticed with interest the letters and controversy surrounding the Pine Lodge treatment centre. I felt that the presentation of some facts pertinent to alcoholism and addiction might prove useful at this juncture.
First, the facts: 1. Alcoholism and addiction are classified as diseases by the Canadian and American medical and psychiatric associations; 2. These diseases have three factors in common. They are chronic, progressive and ultimately fatal if not treated; 3. These diseases do not respect age, gender, occupation or social standing.
Our experience over many years reflects that of many others; namely, that properly operated treatment centres that incorporate a 12-step recovery program can and do return many afflicted with these diseases to society as responsible, functioning individuals. It is vital to understand that these people are not criminals, they are our brothers and sisters, friends and co-workers who are afflicted with a disease.
It is my hope that the presentation of these facts may help with the understanding and appreciation of the role treatment centres play in, and benefit, society at large. Bill Frost, Richmond, B.C.
