The Saskatchewan Legislative Assembly unanimously voted on Friday to send a formal message of condolence to the Queen on the occasion of her late husband's funeral on Saturday.

Premier Scott Moe read the message in the chamber before the vote, which came amid solemn tributes to Prince Philip that contrasted sharply with an especially rowdy question period.

“Most gracious sovereign Queen of Canada, we the members of the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan in session assembled respectfully tender our deep sympathy for the loss you have suffered by the death of Prince Philip,” Moe recited.

“Your Majesty's sorrow is shared by the people of Saskatchewan. We are deeply conscious of this personal and profound loss in the passing of a great gentleman held in esteem throughout Canada.”

The message recalled the eight visits Philip made to Saskatchewan, and spoke of his “genuine curiosity, good humour and kindness.” It also recognized his service in the Second World War.

Moe had earlier noted that Philip fought “alongside Saskatchewan soldiers during the invasion of Sicily,” where he served as a lieutenant with the Royal Navy during the landing of Allied forces. Moe called him a “good and loyal friend” to the province.

“We will forever remember how his devoted service at Your Majesty's side enhanced the dignity and deepened our affection of the Crown,” the message to the Queen continued.

There were no objections to adopting the motion, which will be transmitted to the Queen through the Speaker's Office. NDP Leader Ryan Meili echoed Moe's tribute to the late prince.

“His visits touched Saskatchewan people in so many ways, along with those visits of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II,” said Meili.

“I want to join the premier and the members opposite, and on behalf of Her Majesty's Loyal Opposition offer our sincere condolences to Her Majesty, and to the entire Royal Family, and express our gratitude for the friendship and service of Prince Philip,” he added.

Friday was the second time the assembly has honoured Philip, who died on April 9 at age 99.

The formal message to the Queen was meant to coincide with the funeral, which is scheduled to take place at Windsor Castle on Saturday.
